Hi all,
Last Friday night BBC2 re-broadcast the 1975 X-mas concert.
This gave me the opportunity to record this in the only right way, which is to capture the satellite stream with my Dreambox 8000 satellite  receiver.
I then used ProjectX 0.90.4.00.b31 to demux and mjpegtools mplex-2 version 1.8.0 (2.2.4) to multiplex for DVD.
I added some simple text menus using sourceforge dvdauthor, version 0.6.11.

Stream info:
-> Video length: 00:46:49.600
-> avg. nom. bitrate 3986578bps (min/max: 1082000/8099600)

-> src_audio: MPEG-1, Layer2, 48000Hz, stereo, 256kbps

Size 1.41 GB

Enjoy!

"This has been downloaded 52 time(s)."

So, this is your second thanks !!
Anybody can discuss the comparison with the other share of the same broadcast ? It seems this one is better, reading the first post, but I'm a totally newbie as far as the video is concerned. Seeing no thanks makes me think it is inferior. Where's the truth ? ;o) o) o) o)

This recording is exactly how it came from satellite, so is identical to as broadcast over satellite.
In the recording and authoring process, there is no loss what-so-ever due to analog cables or re-encoding.
So I can say with no doubt, that this is the best possible recording.
And even so, it is much smaller than if you record using a DVD or HD- recorder as you would need to record at a high bit-rate in order to prevent encoding artifacts.
Hope this takes away any doubts!

May I know why the file size here is 1.41 GB whereas the first one by Rien is 3.16 GB ?

I am a novice on videos so I am waiting for the official DVD release.

In theory, a lower data size means the video was recorded at a lower bitrate, therefore worse picture/more artefacting onscreen.
BUT, if this is a direct capture of the data stream, then it ought to be the best quality picture!

Thankyou for the share!!
You seem to have some mean equipment at your disposal :)
Was your satellite reciever provided by the service provided or u ourchased it seperately?
Posted by ParisNairuser not visiting Queenzone.com
on 11/29/2009 9:10:00 PM
Service providers don't give you this type of receivers because they don't want you to have access to the raw stream.
Another advantage of my box is that in case of encrypted broadcast, it stores the stream in decrypted form so that you can still watch it after the encryption keys are updated. This is something that none of the standard harddisc receivers will do.

Cheers,
Frank

First of all, thanks so much to Frank for recording and sharing this one!

Now, comparing both shares I gotta say Frank's look better (Frank's digital stream vs. Rien's regular TV cable)
About the size of both files, not necessarily bigger files mean bigger quality; in most DVDs the bigger part of file size is taken by audio streams (LPCM, DTS, etc)
So looking at Frank's share, 1.41 GB doesn't mean lower quality than Rien's video. Both shares have AC3 2 channel audio stream and that's the best we can get ;-)

Also a huge thanks to Rien for the effort!

and Pete, I just read your PM and gonna reply in few seconds ;-)

Now I'm gonna burn Frank's video onto a rewritable DVD and wait patiently for the official release.

Last thing: Seven Seas Of Rhye, See What A Fool I’ve Been and God Save The Queen were not recorded by BBC cameras so Brian asked for any amateur filming of that "reprise" and pics from that evening.

thanks a lot frank. just watched this one and indeed it's better picture quality than rein's  version, but thanks a lot to rein too, you guys are great! on frank's version there is no ghosting as someone says it's the issue on rein's version. this is probably ultimate edition (quality wise) until official release. too bad it's edited but that's to be expected from QP cos they're going to officially released it one day. maybe someone will put this 2009 edition with old room 101 edition to make it complete (pittrek?)

Not the finest words to choose, after my attempt. (if I read correctly between the lines - forgive me when I'm wrong)
I can only say I did the best I could while there was no other share available in the short time after the BBC broadcast. (presuming lots of fans would have recorded this show).
Hey buddy, you got it for free you know. I come from the time where you had to wait a year or more for a new Queen album to hit the shops and had to save money for it or to see their shows.

Believe me, I think the internet is one of the greatest things of our time, considering how we can share precious stuff like a lot of us do here on Queenzone. It often amazes me what brilliant stuff people come up with. But it also makes us want MORE MORE MORE even before we have digested what has just been offered to us.

But sure, enjoy what's given to you. You should.
I certainly do and really appreciate the newer (sattelite) version. Thanks to the uploader!

Regarding the audio on this DVD: this is also the exact audio of the BBC broadcast, so no loss, re-encoding or anything.
The audio is MPEG-1 Level 2 (often named MP2), which is similar in quality to MP3.

One FINAL comment about the audio.
Some TV channels use multiple sound tracks for some shows, e.g. ZDF sometimes uses 1 MP2 128 kbps, 1 MP2 256 kbps and 1 AC3 stereo.
In such case my box would record all of those tracks (because it stores the full stream with all substreams) and I have the choice which tracks I use when multiplexing for DVD.
However this BBC broadcast only came with 2 MP2 256 kbps stereo sound tracks which were identical as far as I could tell, so I used one of those for multiplexing to DVD.

It doesn't make sense to "record as LPCM" as that would actually be a conversion (similar to converting mp3 to flac) that does not add any quality but just makes the resulting file bigger!

So this share is the best possible capture both video and sound-wise in the smallest possible size.
What more do you want?

Regarding MPEG1 Level 2 sound, this format conforms to the DVD audio standard and also is the most commonly used audio format in satellite broadcast (DVB-S).

Greetings,
Frank

I've got a few torrents downloading, but this one can't find any seeds.  Interestingly enough my username is also absent from the Torrent list at the top of the page.

Has anyone had similar difficulties?

Otherwise, thanks for sharing the file.  Not living in the UK I would have otherwise missed out entirely on seeing this show.

Thanks so much for this, I hope the official release is as nice. (Plus of course the songs that BBC failed to air like White Queen, Ogre Battle and such) I don't understand something, Why if the band kept playing didn't they just keep the cameras rolling for Seven Seas & See What A Fool?

I really hope and wish that they'd do a DVD release with this paired with Rainbow 74, the WHOLE show, not just the crap edit that made its way to VHS copies.

Again thanks though, something to tide us non UK people over til the release of the DVD!

Because the crew's job was to film it for TV.  The broadcast portion of the show had ended, so they were packing up their gear.

Back then, people generally didn't go out of their way to film bands without a good reason to do so, as they had no idea how valuable such footage would be decades later.  There isn't too much footage of bands like Queen, Led Zeppelin, and Kiss from the 70s, even though they each played hundreds of concerts ... and there is even less of The Who, Pink Floyd, Genesis, The Eagles, and plenty of others.

This one is better than the previous, but the version i have had for years is better than what BBC showed for some odd reason? lol.  I will tell you, anyone that hasn't seen this, this has Freddie's best performance of In the lap of the gods...revisited on it!!!
