What do you think?

Post Reply

This turned out so good I just had to share it.
I realize some people were able to upgrade the audio on their own, but I'm sure there are others who were not, so this is for them.

Thanks to the original seeder, the video of this DVD is excellent, thanks to Bob for suggesting to extract the audio in wav and reduce it to mono and double the volume, and the chap who went through the trouble of posting the chapter points.

I authored the DVD with Tsunami DVD author, and once again, the audio is LPCM MONO, but it sounds super. So this DVD has a menu and chapters.

I will post screens of two menus, I think you all know what the video quality is like.

Enjoy.

If you run the DVD through Shrink or GSpot, it will show the audio as AC3 stereo, but it is not. I basically imported the LPCM mono over the AC3 audio in Tsunami.

Shrink will also show a wrong sized audio file, the correct size is about 600 MBs.

Ehm, if you don't want to download this one, don't be afraid, you'll surely get a very good (probably slightly better than this) version :-) And no, this doesn't look like pow wow's or 928's work

I don't know what he is doing. If he is planning to use lossless audio with this video, I think the file would have to be a DVD9, unless he reduces it to mono as well. The audio I extracted was 1.2 GB and I reduced it to mono, so it was half the size. The original DVD was about 3.8 GBs so I don't think he can fit the stereo PCM and the video on a DVD5.
But I could be wrong.

The audio on this is decompressed AC3.

Heads up

This DVD here IS NOT LPCM audio.
It is uncompressed AC3 audio to LPCM.Therefore it's still AC3 ...lossy.

The version i am doing will be pure LPCM.Real LPCM.
Basically when i'm done,it will be the definitive of Houston 77.

EDIT:....sorry Tgunn, you told of the AC3 while i was posting this.

Why wouldn't I tell? It sounds great, better than any other version so far.

If you have the LCPM why don't you up just the audio?

Then I'd like to see if you can squeeze a full LPCM audio file onto a DVD5.

928 has stated before that he has two options:

Double layered DVD or 2 DVD´s.

I still don´t know in wich format he will upload it (in case he does), but i only asked because after he stated what he was doing there were some people loosing time trying to do the same thing. I apreciate all the work (and you already stated that you didn´t knew about his work), but since this type of work is time consuming -and i hate doing it myself ; ) - i was just wondering why people are still doing it when he has the best audio source avaiable!

But let me tell you that i apreciate you efforts to make a better version avaiable in the Queen comunity. Thanks for sharing!

I wasn't sure if anyone was authoring a DVD with the lossless audio. I waited for a while to see if anyone would post the LPCM here, when I saw nothing I simply authored the DVD with the decompressed AC3, which I reduced to mono and then doubled the volume, as Bob had suggested.

It was an easy process, the menu took some time, but I kept the Tsunami project file, and if I need to, I can make another DVD easily with lossless audio, or download 928's "ultimate" version. If I reauthor mine, I will look for some high res photos of the Houston concert on this site.

Once I had added the chapters, it took about 30 minutes to build DVD files and then 15 minutes to burn a copy to a DVD-RW so I could see and hear how it turned out.

I was blown away. I have the other version, with the vertical lines, and I thought that DVD had the best audio until I played this. It's LOUD, sounds great, and LOOKS great, the video is beautiful. So, I thought some people here might want a better sounding version, and one with chapters and menus.

If 928 or whoever else decides to author a better version, wonderful. I would definitely download it, for trading and sharing purposes, but I honestly don't think the audio will sound that much better. I will make a big difference in that it will be lossless, while this is lossy, but for now I can live with this version.

I played it three times over the weekend, by the way. It's the best Queen concert I have seen on video.

Perhaps QP has the multitrack, but as far as we know, there isn't one. Every documentary and even Rare Live has a mono soundtrack (assumingly the video feed). This DVD shared here is just as good as any of these official sources.

Thanks, Bob.

How can you tell is an audio source was originally mono, even if it was later made into pseudo-stereo?

Honestly, I came across this solution by sheer chance. All I can suggest is you randomly try this on various recordings to see the result!

But to tell you the truth, the only time I've ever seen this kind of thing is with Houston 77... two different versions, several gens apart. Who knows how it got that way...

UPdate:

OK folks,
The audio discs finally arrived(thx Dennis).
They are lossless.
They are not stereo but mono on stereo(not fake stereo.....yet).
Work has begun but i want some opinions from y'all on something before i go ahead & do this idea.
Here is what i want to know>

Would you all prefer that i leave those still photos between songs......or.......would you think it better if i replaced those with audience footage instead..you know,to keep the whole show moving.

Let me know what you think. If the yes to no ratio is higher...i shall commence with the idea.

I think he means footage of the audience, the camera is on the audience, not the band filmed by someone in the audience.

Audience footage is audience footage,it doesn't even have to come from the same show or even a Queen show..it's audience, people having a good time.

I just feel that those stills break the enjoyment flow down a tad....like gaps on a CD.You're sort of left in limbo waiting for something. You with me?

But it isn´t the same thing as well! We know how our brain works, and even if the end result is great, we have to fool ourselves a little to believe the crowd is having fun at "that" concert. It will be kind of "Kiss alive" or "live killers" for that matter, and if i remembered correctly people didn´t enjoyed the "make-up". It´s just my 2 cents.

Having said this, my advice is:
Do it the best way it suits you! You´re the one having the work to do it, and even if we apreciate your gesture of asking us, i think you don´t have to do the work twice (because from what you´ve said, it´s obvious that you´ll gonna make the "crowd" version for you).

And i´m kinda curious to see the end result, and i really apreciate your time and efford to do this.

Take care

P.S- Just one thing- try not to put a crowd of 300.000 people ; ))

This is the same DVD seeded by Valentine, I think, the AC3 audio was decompressed, made into mono, and the volume was doubled.

I tried it out to see how it would sound, as you have seen I didn't pay too much attention to the menu photos, I just put it together quickly. It could have been better, but there will be a better version soon, with lossless audio, from 928.

Things are slow.
It seems, after scrutinizing the audio i recieved, that although lossless ..my gut feeling says it is a rip from an NTSC VHS.
You can definatly hear splice cuts and tape noise.

Yes i agree that the tape noise could be from "the master tape" but to explain sync issues after an average 16 seconds says a possibility of things.
Maybe just stretched from overplaying...not sure.

Anyway, tiresome work has to be done to sort this.

Best synopsis on progress is to let you know that when it's done it's done.
BUT...Regardless of audio origin,it's lossless and when run side by side with the audio from all releases of Houston DVD's...it blows them away.
Just don't hold your breath for a early release.
It will be done though..i said it,it'll happen.

Sorry for missing this question before!

Two ways:

1) Just look at the two channels of the waveform, and check to see if they look different

2) Copy one of the channels into its own mono window, and listen to see if it sounds the same

Can you quote the time where the distortion occurs? I noticed some "clicks" at the beginning of Prophet's song around 1 h 4 minutes, and they appear in my version as well as the Japanese disc. I can't find the old NTSC version I had, the one with the TV lines in it, I may have tossed it.

However, wasnt 928 supposed to create the final version ( sound from lossless source) of this concert?
Im just curious since im not too updated on things lately.

You got it right. The audio on this was decompressed and the volume doubled.

928 is using the same video, but is syncing it with lossless audio, and it will be on two DVD5s.

Can anyone give me a clue about how this whole bittorrent thing works? I have no idea what all of these acronyms mean. =) I downloaded the program, but it's not doing anything. On the site FAQ it said something about firewalls and such, but I don't know where to access that on my computer.

Sorry, but I'm really not tech savvy! I just REALLY want this amazing download, and I would love to be able to burn it as a DVD. I just have no clue how. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I help.

1) Go to http://utorrent.com/ and download the lastest (1.7.5) version of utorrent. It's free, fast and easy.

2) After you have this program on your Windows PC, you need to click on the link in the first message of this topic to save the torrent file of Houston DVD.

3) Start utorrent program. In the program click "add new torrent" - choose Houston-DVD-torrent file (from the folder where you saved it). And you start downloading!

Thanks a lot! I think it's all working good...I'm at like 20% now.

Can I burn a DVD using Bit Torrent, or what program should I use? I know I've got a DVD burner and everything, but I've never used it before.

You're welcome! I am as you not so friendly with softwares :-)

When you finish downloading the torrent you will have all necessary files to burn DVD! (that's really great! Someone had a big work to prepare all those needed files). To create/burn DVD the best program is NERO (6 or 7th version). Try to get it.

I am at 72% now and we have seeders (thanks to them a lot!!!), and I will seed to help.

Has anyone else noticed the distortion in White Man and the guitar solo? Or is it just somehow on my copy?

If it isn't, then I'll just have to download it again. I previewed it while I was downloading, so maybe I messed it up somehow.

Any help?

I confirm it. Have watched it in both TV and computer, it starts distorting in the beggining of White Man and it only ends in the last seconds of the guitar solo.

It seems like the sound is too loud and there comes a noise over some portions of the sound, mainly some guitar parts. I can´t describe it any better.

Yeah, I could say the same - a level is a liitle bit over. I don't have good speakers now but on my 42" Panasonic's TV speakers it sounds like low frequencies is tinkled a little (John's bass sounds a little strange and detailed - listen to the bass guitar in the first verse (and the whole song) of Keep Yourself Alive, Tie Your Mother Down).

Absolutely. Convert the FLAC files to WAV with "FLAC Frontend", and then use some program like CDex to convert the WAV files to mp3.

Well...not sure how to do that. I can't figure out how to open the DVD in FLAC. First of all, it's in like 10 parts. Do I have to do every part separately? And secondly, it says they are "VOB" files, not FLAC. Is that right? I feel so dumb, sorry! =) I'm a Queen fan without an inch of technical knowlege!

And I've been seeding as much as I can...I'm going to seed all day tomorow, so that should help.

Oh, wait... this is a DVD!

Hmm... okay, it's a bit of a process to convert from DVD to WAV to mp3, and to split all the tracks.

I suggest you download the audio in FLAC format here:

http://www.queenzone.com/queenzone/forumnew/forum_topic_view.aspx?Q=1058575

...and then convert it to WAV and then mp3 as I described above. White Man and the the guitar solo are distorted on this DVD, so the audio only version is better if that's what you're going for.
