Original comments:

Dear Queenies,

For those of you on Dime, I just uploaded this. Give me some time and I will try to upload it here also. I'm new to all this shit so bear with me. I hope it's worth the effort and people can enjoy this superb recording.

Cheers,

Keith.

QUEEN - FLASH ALIVE (Wembley Arena, 8th December, 1980) - Transfer From Japanese Double LP

This has always been my favourite Queen bootleg. A great performance and lots of power, particularly showcasing Brian May's fantastic guitar sound. I saw Queen a lot when I was younger and there's not many that can match their production. A good friend of mine had this LP when we were at school. Such is the volume, we once trashed my speakers whilst listening to the 'Overture' at full tilt. My friend later sold his copy which is something he has always regretted. I hung on to my taped copy for years before deciding to track down the original LP myself; not an easy feat as it is now extremely rare and expensive (I paid £200 for it a couple of years ago). Although it is a very good copy, I had it professionally cleaned before transferring it to my PC. I'm afraid that my technical skills are lacking in this area and I simply used a USB turntable and Audacity. However, I think it's turned out well and IMO, it's a lot better than the recent 'Standing On The Arena' CD bootleg release. This is my first donation and as such, I hope I'm doing everything correctly. I didn't attempt to remove all the vinyl clicks as; a. I didn't want to mess with the recording too much and b. I wanted to hear the odd snap crackle and pop for old times sake. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Check out BM's guitar towards the end of Fat Bottomed Girls. There's a brief pause before it kicks back in with the beat. What a beautiful sound!

This has always been my favourite Queen bootleg. A great performance and lots of power, particularly showcasing Brian May's fantastic guitar sound. I would urge anybody who isn't familiar with this bootleg to give it a few spins. After a while, it becomes a complete monster. I saw Queen a lot when I was younger and there's not many that can match their production. A good friend of mine had this LP when we were at school. Note the unusual order of the numbers at the end of the gig and check out BM's guitar towards the end of Fat Bottomed Girls (4:47). There's a brief pause before it kicks back in with the beat. What a beautiful sound! The vocals and guitar solo on Save Me are just heart-wrenching and listen to the crowd as BM steps to the front and delivers the solo in Play The Game. Vintage BM Bends! I also like the reference to the 'Royal Family' just prior to Bo Rap. Motherf*ckers!

Finally, I would like to tip my hat to the original taper; the origins of this recording ha

Minor historical note: this is the show played the night that John Lennon was killed. The following evening, the band played "Imagine" as a tribute to him.

Right well as this share is so utterly fantastic I felt inspired to go out and hunt down the artwork. Alas all I could find was a couple of ropey photos of a badly foxed copy shot at a weird angle.

Not to worry, I have some skills with Photoshop so I've distorted the images back to a planar view, fixed the contrast, sharpened the images, removed the fox marks and even re-composited new text to match the original.

Here's the front - I hope you like it!

Of course, if anybody could point me to high res versions of the original images used for the LP cover then I could do a much better High Res restoration. In fact I'd quite like that!

Thank you all!!!!!

Sound quality is nice, uneven performance. Brian May and Roger Taylor are quite focused and clearly excited in this one. They're enjoying the whole thing - though Roger's arms must have suffered a bit lol - and Freddie and John are ok: both lacking some creativity and a bit detached, it seems.

Incredible performance, but I'm curious as to one little setlist quirk. Ordinarily, we know, TYMD was part of the "base" set, closing it hard after Bo Rhap and keeping the crowd amped for the encores. With the encores being switched around a bit here, I'm curious as to the breaks. It certainly sounds like the band goes straight from Bo Rhap into WWRY/WATC, or am I mistaken? Here's my idea of how the setlist went--let me know if I'm wrong.

Bo Rhap
WWRY
WATC
--encore break--
AOBTD
SHA
--encore break--
TYMD

Am I correct, or did the set end with Bo Rhap, then three encores?

Really grateful for you sharing this, but it's horribly distorted throughout. I know it's asking a lot but is there any chance you could maybe try retransferring from the vinyl please?

"Flash Alive stark remaster"?
Posted by bohemianmoominuser not visiting Queenzone.com
on 2/11/2008 8:34:00 AM
Ha! That did make me laugh. Very kind.. I was thinking this might be the next one as I've got a friend who went to that show, but distortion is impossible to fix, and if anything, a remaster will make it sound worse..

Fingers crossed for a new transfer, because it does sound like a good recording.

Regarding distortion;

I know that some of the more technically minded people of Dime checked out my transfer levels and they were OK. I believe that the "distortion" is part and parcel of the original recording. As a result, carrying out another transfer from the vinyl won't bring any benefit. I'm pretty sure about this because the recording sounds just the same when I play the vinyl.

It would be great to track down the master cassettes though and get a direct transfer from them. There's always the hope that the bootleggers didn't check their levels carefully enough when they produced the pressing and that a tasty cassette copy exists.

I often wonder if they've been long forgotten in a dusty loft somewhere......

Keith.

Mm, that does sound plausible. Let's hope it turns up! Still one of my top 10 recordings though. The master tape for this recording is probably around 3 on my wish list, beneath a complete recording of the Oakland 80 show (Death on two legs from that show...just unbelievable, one of the only occasions when Freddie not only nailed the song, but actually surpasses his studio performance) and an almost certainly non existent EX quality SBD recording of the 2nd night at Newcastle 79 :P
So yeah...if anyone has a magic lamp....

I take your point and it is possible that the original recording is distorted, but this transfer peaks well above 0dBFS (i.e.into distortion). Most CD players (and many peak meters) will read 0dbFS as a digital 'over' and distort accordingly. For a 'safe' transfer you should be looking to peak at -2dB maximum. This might sound a bit much, but it guarantees no distortion, and gives plenty of room for subsequesnt processing.

Was this your originally your transfer? If yes, many thanks, and if you can find the time to do it again I'll swap you for my remaster of the Zep show at the O2 (from the Wendy release - it sounds glorious!).

Maybe an excellent soundboard of Newcastle'79 exists. Several shows of the crazy tour were recorded! Most likely the manchester shows, liverpool 2nd night, 22.12.79 so let's hope that one of these shows had freddie in newcastle shape!

Hi Stark,

Thanks for the comments. Yes, it was my original transfer using a USB turntable so I could go back and do it again; in fact I will when I get a couple of spare days.

Your O2 remaster sounds interesting. I was at the O2 show and I'm familiar with the Wendy release....

As for Newcastle 79; yes indeed!!!!

Discovering 'new' tapes is immensely rewarding when you pull it off; I used to work really hard at it with Zep tapes although at times it was like trying to find the proverbial needle! The most satisfying discovery I personally had was probably the Belfast 1971 show where they played Stairway live for the first time. And Nancy (France) 1973 was quite an obscure one.

I haven't heard the Oakland 80 Queen show; I must pick that up based on bohemianmoomin comments!

Cheers,

Keith.

I certainly appreciate that show! Need your lovin' tonight is perfect during that show aswell. And Bohemian Rhapsody is a brilliant version. It's one of those shows with freddie in brilliant shape. I regret we do not have the complete show. Would love to hear Now I'm here and WATC from the Oakland'80 show.

If I think about Freddie's best performances, this is my list of shows: -London 8/12/80, - Newcastle 4/12/79, -Brussels 24/8/84, -tokyo 9/5/85, -Buenos Aires 8/3/81, -Puebla 17/10/81,-Leeds 29/5/82,-two vienna nights in '82, -Copenhagen'78, -Bristol and glasgow'77, -Leiden 11/6/86.
I've got a soft spot for New York 28/7/82 too. Nobody ever mentions that show as a great show but in my opinion Queen was in brilliant shape that night.
We had some discussion about freddie's live vocals on queenzone in the past but if you see this list(and there are more great shows(or better than average shows)we can say he could be fantastic live too. I'm only talking about his voice. As an entertainer he was ALWAYS in shape! And he always gave his all. I admire that about him. He simply went for it, and if his voice was shot he would still try to give the audience as much as possible of it.

I don't know if anyone else has found this but 'Let Me Entertain You' is missing from my download?
It is on the track list as no. 3 but plays as 'Play The Game'.

Also 'Death On Two Legs' is present but not on the tracklist (plays under 'Mustapha'). Mustapha plays under 'Play The Game'.

From 'I'm In Love With My Car' onwards the tracks match the list.

Many thanks to Ginger01. I'll seed it for a few weeks (on and off, it's a laptop). It will bring back some great memories!

I remember Freddie's comment about his mustache so it may be I was one of the audience! Thanks again Ginger01 and Keith for a cracking bootleg recording.

Rg91, This looks like a seriously good upload and I'm very tempted to snare it!Thank you!

If I could just take us off topic for a moment (please forgive me):

You mentioned dimeadozen in your initial post. Can you please tell me how you do a search in Dime? For example, how do you search for 'Queen'?

Everytime I try, I end up with a bunch of unrelated search results. I looked up the Dime FAQ's about how to do this, and I felt like I needed a linguistics degree... subboolean something or other, parentheses...??? Any tips appreciated! Once again folks, sorry for taking us off-topic.

I'd just search for Keep Yourself Alive or Bohemian Rhapsody in quotes.  Between the two of them, that should bring up just about every Queen share.

Hi There

Like you I was lucky as I was at the concert that night on 8th Dec 1980 at wembley when I think that they were at their best ?
But what is even luckier is that I still have my japanese "flash alive" LP & program of the night !!
And before you ask, no I am not trying to sell it...sorry
It is stored away sealed in a plastic sleave
But yes I agree with you the sound is out of this world

all the best

Queen fan
