Once in a while, karma smiles
and something really special just sort of falls in your lap. This is
one of those moments. Carl was up in Foxboro, Mass to see John Wetton
and The School Of Rock All-Stars, and being the friendly guy that he
is, he started talking with the guy sitting next to him. Turns out they
had more than a little common musical ground, starting with King
Crimson and it worked rapidly downhill from there. Shockingly, the
topic of tapes came up and it just so happens this guy taped a bunch of
shows in the 1970s that he essentially kept to himself. You don't have
to be a rocket scientist to figure out what happened next. This series
of torrents represents the fruits of Carl's labour - multiple trips to
Dan's house to pick up tapes, lovingly and carefully transfer the
recordings and then prepare them for our collective listening pleasure.
It is my honour to be able to seed these recordings and I hope that
everyone who downloads them will get as much enjoyment out of them as
we have. The master list of the shows Dan recorded is still under
construction and we will circulate that as well as some photographic
documentation of the project somewhere down the line. Please don't clog
my inbox with requests for your favourite band(s) or a show you hope
may exist after all these years.....just kick back, relax and let the
surprises unfold.....

Without any further delay, I present for your enjoyment:

Dan Lampinski recorded over 100 concerts in the Providence/Boston
area, mostly between 1974 and 1978. His earliest recordings were made
with an internal microphone deck, and though they are somewhat lo-fi
compared to his later work, some very great moments in rock history
were captured for posterity. In late 1974 he bought a Sony TC-152SD
tape recorder, a Sony ECM-99 stereo microphone, and began using Maxell
cassettes. He was also fortunate enough to have a friend who provided
excellent taping seats for many shows, resulting in high quality
recordings. In 1977, he switched over to a Nakamichi 550 tape recorder,
two Nakamichi CM-300 microphones, and continued using Maxell cassettes.

He recorded many of the major 70's bands: Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd,
Queen, Blue Oyster Cult, Frank Zappa, Jethro Tull, ELP, Kiss, Black
Sabbath, The Who, Al Stewart, Alice Cooper, Jeff Beck, Bruce
Springsteen, Supertramp, Jean-Luc Ponty, Moody Blues, Neil Young, The
Faces, Rush, Rick Wakeman, Kansas, as well as several "under the radar"
acts.

Since Dan never traded copies of his recordings, they are all
essentially uncirculated. Some copies were made for friends, but these
releases are the first time most of these recordings have ever seen the
light of day, and are direct from his master cassettes. No EQ'ing has
been done to any of the transfers. Feel free to EQ, matrix, patch, etc
and re-post if you like, just give Dan credit for the original
recording.

Dan was very meticulous about taking good care of his tapes and is
very pleased that these recordings will now circulate among the trading
community. Please honour his kindness and generosity by sharing these
recordings freely.

The transfers are available as 16bit/44.1KHz flac files suitable
for CD burning, and also as 24bit/96KHz flac files for those who prefer
the higher resolution.

Always remember - the more generous you are with your music, the more it comes back to you.

Brilliant... thanks for seeding it here!

And thanks to everyone involved in getting this out in the open.  Judging by some of the comments on Dime, this may be one of the greatest Queen tapes ever.

I gave it a listen and was completely blown away. Top-notch quality. Great setlist, too. Freddie's hitting some nice notes in LOASA which he omitted in the Japanese leg.

I just tried pitch correction thru Goldwave. I reduced it to 96%. It sounds great at this speed. I'll have to find my metronome to match the Bo Rhap intro to the original recording.

Wow! Just WOW! This is up there with Chicago '78 in terms of quality--check it, I'd argue it's better. This sounds like a soundboard recording at some points. Crisp, clear sound, and the audience is barely heard during songs.

Is it just me, or is the sound in general (but especially Brian's guitar) much heavier during the rockers on the US tour than it was in the European ANATO tour? Or am I just listening to a recording so much better than anything else we have from these tours (short of Hammy '75) that there's really no basis for comparison?

Probably the latter.  Clarity really does give it a whole new dimension.

I have heard approximately 50% of the concert and for me this is already the best bootleg thus far. It has everything. Freddie is the big star of the show. What an incredible range did the guy have. He reaches notes which he normally doesn't go for. Throughout the show are lovely harmonies as well. In The Lap Of The Gods f.e.

This might be the bootleg to get anyone into Queen. :)

I know this may sound unheard of, but some of us still do MP3, is there anyone out there that could post this show as MP3s on Megaupload or Rapidshare? I have an older PC and I just can't seem to get FLAC files to workout.

It takes them about 15 seconds to get going in the Son and daughters bit:-)

Seven seas of rhye is indeed brilliant. I adore that song and this version is surely the best.

It's a fantastic document of this tour, a very necessary document too because there's so little we have for that tour.

Hopefully we'll get a new US 1975 tape some time in the future too:-) It's obvious that for new stuff our hopes should be pointed towards the US and Japan.

Back home... Listening to the recording right now...
I'm speachless.
This is without a doubt the best 70s recording I've ever heard. Amazing quality. Sounds like a soundboard.

Very interesting to hear a 76 Queen show in this quality. I hear details I never heard before on a Queen live recording.

Thanks Rick for confirming it, I thought I'm crazy when I think it's slightly too fast :-)
Well I can do it if nobody else wants, I just need a "cover artist" to make it as good as possible :-)

It's just completely wrong to repost a show in mp3.  It's the biggest possible slap in the face to the taper and transferrer, as if to tell them that we don't care about nor appreciate the work that went into getting the recording from the venue to us in the best possible quality in the first place.  If they found out that Queen collectors were mp3ing their recordings, they would think, what's the point of doing the work again on another recording in the future?  It has happened before, and as a result, some tapes will never be heard.  I don't think anyone would want this to happen again.

Download FLAC Frontend, and with that you can decode it to WAV.  From there you can burn it to CD instead of reducing the quality.  But if you must... there are plenty of mp3 encoders to be found on the net.  Good luck.

Thank you very much for being surfaced this old show in this quality for burning. It's incredible how good can sound a recording of more than 30 years ago.

I didn't like so much their 1976 tour but now I have to say that this in Boston is one of most beautiful performances I ever heard from Queen in the seventies. Their music was so sophisticated in that period and you can feel how much creative they were.

Sorry about that! That request was wrong of me and I apologise. It's just that I can't get FLAC to work for me, I tried all that you had mentioned below with no luck. I did however find what I was looking for on another site, and I must say this is the best I have heard in a long time, even if it is of "lower" quality!

cheers.

I've listened to this concert in full for the third time now, and I'm still amazed. Amazed about the great performance with some nice surprises, but first of all about the spectacular sound quality. Yes, it must have been a perfectly mixed PA sound there to get such a recording, but how that guy managed to capture it in this quality is beyond me. Am I halluzinating, or can you really hear the champagne glasses on Freddie's piano jingle when he hits a hard note? Is that the snare drum's wires that I hear vibrating with the bass notes in "ITLOFTG rev."? Never noticed details like that in any audience recording from the 70s or 80s (maybe even 90s) so far, absolutely stunning. On most recordings fine nuances get lost in distortion and/or hiss, but on this one it's all preserved. Being an audience recording, it has the advantage of the realistic atmosphere anyway, but combined with the sound quality of a (semi-) professional soundboard recording this is unbeatable. Hats off and thanks to all involved!

Hi,

as promised a couple of days ago, I´ve redone the first inner page of my artwork, updated as per Bob´s deeper review of the show in his site. Thanks Bob !

ps: the other blank pics are for Son And Daughter, who requested them for wallpaper use. Cheers, man ;)

ps2: this is my post number 1000 !!! a child´s play, compared to other deities, but I´m happy for that ;D

cheers to every Queenzoner !!
