Hello,

I've decided to purchase another MP3 player, but have not yet decided which one to buy. I'm here to ask you of your opinions on what is the best MP3 player. Everybody seems to think the ipod rocks, but I'm not convinced with it and have found Toshiba to be just as reliable (or so I've heard from reviews). The price range I'm looking for is nothing more than $250.

I would truly appreciate your help and guidance in this confusing decision. There are just too many companies out there selling "their" MP3 players. Between Phillips, Microsoft, Apple, and all those other crazy companies I'm lost between which is the best, or the one that comes closest to an ipod.

And truthfully, I really don't want an ipod. I'm more interested in the one that comes closest to an ipod, which I've come to the conclusion might be a Toshiba.

Thanks in advance!!!

Truly yours,

Ramirez

I love my 30GB Creative Zen Vision:M - audio, video, pictures, voice recorder, fm tuner, etc, etc, etc - all for $155.

I did my research and it holds up with the best of them.

Whatever you get, make sure it's not an MP3-player, but a lossless player like the iPod. And get some good headphones. That's what nearly all players are missing.

Condoning it, more like. Mind you, I still believe that the only really good system the world has ever seen was the Scandinavian welfare socialism of the early 20th century.

Thank you for your opinions thus far...however I'm wondering if any of you have anything to say about the following MP3 players.

Toshiba MEV30K Gigabeat V 30 GB Portable Media Player

and the

Zune 30 GB Digital Media Player

So far all of the MP3 players I've looked at seem to all have stupid glitches, such as freezing up and charging problems. In addition to your opinions of the above Media Players, do most if not all MP3 players have terrible glitches? Or is there actually one out there that works perfectly with no flaws (except for the ipod of course)?

Have you looked at reviews on CNET - can't remember what it was, but I seem to recall that they weren't too favorable toward the Zune. I have begun to see it marked down in price, presumably due to low sales.

Gigabeat apparently has poor software, but there is a third-party platform (Rockbox? or something like that) that works wonders on a Gigabeat. You might look at the Gigabeat forums.

And again, I love my Zen Vision - no problems with using the player and it does everything you could want. I'd be interested to know what problems you think it has.

In regards to the Creative, here are a few reviews I've found.

"I'm not typically the type that likes to write a review of a product. However, if you've spent as much time as I have trying to find that "perfect" MP3, then you may want to read this.
I purchsed the Creative Vision M - 30G in April 2007. After reading many positive reviews and comparing it to an IPOD or ZUNE, I felt I made the best choice for me. I was confident my money was well spent. However, to be safe, I also purchased an additional 2 year replacement warranty. I do a lot of running as well as using my MP3 in the car or docked while we are camping. I'm glad I did!
The first month of use was terrific. It's a head turner! Many people carry IPODS and they were way impressed with what my MP3 had to offer. I purchased many expensive accessories to go with my Vision M, including a protective case, docking station, chargers for in the car or on the wall, and numerous other gadgets.
However, by June 2007, my Vision M completely locked up on me. The battery runs itself down, I recharge, reset...nothing. It's dead. After doing a few more searches online, I've discovered that several other people have also had the same problem. I am lucky, I have a replacement plan. And due to my many accessories, I guess I have no choice but to get another VISION M. But I also can't recover any of my 500 saved songs or pics so that's many more hours of my time spent in front of the computer. Great.

Do yourself a favor. If your reading this post because you really want to take the time to make an informed decision about which MP3 to purchase, you probably need to keep shopping. I love mine, yea, it's cool looking, great options...but not a lot of good when it doesn't turn on. I look forward to getting a replacement and trying again. But if I had another option, I wouldn't buy this one."

"Simply put, the Zen Vision M just doesn't operate exactly as it was engineered to. Apparently Creative knows this as evidenced by numerous unhelpful firmware updates. Some of the issues I've encountered include:
1) Limited/No accessories in stores
2) "Random" play isn't very random at all
3) Occasionally a song will play with horrible distortion (approx. every 20th song) - skipping then returning to the song alleviates this problem
4) Player freezes forcing you to "restart" or "restore" the mp3 player. Those 5,000-10,000 songs and 400 pictures you had loaded on your player? Forget about them. Theyre gone. You will have to reload your player.

Buy a really comfortable chair for your PC because you will be spending lots of time in front of your computer loading and re-loading content on your gremlin-loaded Creative Zen Vision M.

Buy a Zune."

"I purchased the Creative Zen M (30GB) in early March and loved it. It has a great looking screen and I used it in conjunction with Napster.

Suddenly last week I started to get a message on my computer when I plugged the unit into the USB port that said that it couldn't recognize the player. I went on Creative's website and followed the support suggestions to remedy the problem. Needless to say the problem remained. After getting on the customer discussion board, I found that this is a very common bug that isn't at all easy to fix. Many people spend countless hours trying to fix it. While some get lucky, many don't.

After 4 days of researching, reinstalling software, messing with USB and device settings, it still doesn't work. This effectively renders the Zen useless since you can't upload anything to it anymore. After 2 days, I still haven't heard back from Creative's help line and naturally, I'm passed the time period for free phone tech support. Basically, I've wasted lots of money and time on this product. And I don't appear to be the only customer who's had this experience.

Creative's perspective appears to be that this is

That certainly doesn't sound too good, but I've not had those problems - with one exception. If you do run the battery all the way down (which it sounds like one user did), the player doesn't respond as quickly as you would like when you recharge it.

But as for those other issues, (knock on wood) nothing happening here.

^Thanks for the information...much appreciated.

Now, I'm still looking for more opinions. Like I said, I'm purely looking for something that is reliable and can use Windows Media Player. Videos are not a necessity for me, nor are the pictures. I just want something that can hold all of my Queen music in addition to all of my other artists.

I think I've narrowed it down to four:

*Zune 30 GB Digital Media Player (Black)

*Toshiba MES60VK Gigabeat 60 GB Portable Media Player (Black)

*30GB GoGear Digital Music Jukebox

*Creative Zen Vision:M 30 GB MP3 and Video Player (Black)

I know it is a lot to ask for, but I'm still asking for your opinions. Do you have anything negative to say about one of these? Do you recommend one of these? I'll listen to whatever you have to say...and I'll appreciate it a lot as well.

I just wanted a simple Mp3 player that I can listen to while I'm playing bingo (don't make fun of me). So my husband got me the RCA Opal. I love it but Caspar is right about the headphones. I just got it for Mother's Day and I can already hear some sort of crackling in one of the ear phones. I don't know if I have to order a set from RCA or just get some at the store. I'd love some suggestions though.

Thank you so much Charles, that was a wonderful review!!!

I'll take what you've said into account.

p.s.

I'm particularly interested in the Zune right now, what do you guys have to say about that particular MP3 player? I have a feeling I'll either get that one or the Creative.

Thank you to everybody who helped me! I've recently purchased my new mp3 player, and I'm sure I made the right decision. I chose to get the Zune, and it was worth the price (just about $200).

Once again thanks!!!
