Here is what a journalist said of Freddie: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/article634052.ece

Does anyone have any opinions about this? Does anyone agree with this? I personally that this is way too harsh. I also really enjoyed "Freddie Mercury: Magic Remixed."

I care more about the opinions of people close to him. Like he said in an interview:he was good and bad. Like everyone else.

Freddie was private about his illness. I will always defend him for this. Famous or not, someone's medical condition is that person's business only.

For me, freddie was an original:-)

There are more articles with that content. All these journalists are on Brian's 'journo list':-)

All the boring, obvious questions the author raises are answered in the documentary. Maybe he needs to see it again. I'm very shy as well yet in large groups of people I can be very social...the author doesn't seem to understand much of anything about human beings in general.

Yeah, I guess that something happened. It just does not make sense that anyone would bear such a grudge. What the hell.

For one thing, you are correct in saying that people can be particularly shy around only a couple of people. These same people are not shy when they are in a big group. I do not think that this is a contradiction. Do you?

"Snobbish" is particularly off from everything that I have ever read. And "phoney"? What the hell? I might agree to some extent with "narcissistic" though.

There's always someone who's jealous. Gee whiz. I guess someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed.

And the question of Freddie being not shy in front of a crowd/shy in front of other people reminds me of a section I wrote in a book on handwriting analysis - someone can be an extrovert (have large handwriting) but also hide their true feelings (leftward slant).

And, I certainly don't see Freddie as self pitying. Freddie may have been, at one time or another, a less than ideal role model for the youth of the world, however, it certainly seems as if he was absolutely NOT self pitying. I know from what I speak: I am a TERRIBLE self pityer. TERRIBLE. That is one of the things I admired about Freddie. As flawed as he was, he seemed content to just be Freddie, who was really quite a contradiction on several levels.

I sort of want to pugilize that reporter.

It sounds a little like Brian did when he attacked the journalist who insulted Mika. Started out strongly but reverted to petty insults. 'Self-pitying, selfish and downright snobbish' are insults normally traded by someone who has been hurt by someone else whom they know well. Although it is true that Freddie was nowhere near perfect, had sex with countless strangers and boasted about having more lovers than Liz Taylor, he was no worse than other rock stars of the time, but people expect rock stars to behave perfectly yet manage to play to the media's image of 'bad boys/girls' at the same time.

Still that report clearly didn't turn anyone against Freddie so no use getting upset now.

Just resurrecting this thread cos I missed it the first time.
I couldn't see the name of the writer, maybe I missed it but he/she seemed to contradict themself. Saying that Freddie only wanted to be a star and then castigating him for not raising AIDS awareness seems strange to me. Why the hell should a rock star who has spent many a hedonistic moment suddenly make a complete turnaround and start preaching responsibility? It wasn't his duty to do that, that's like saying everyone who's been hooked on drugs/alcohol at one point has to tour schools etc telling kids to 'just say no'
The writer also calls Freddie 'self-pitying' which made me laugh since we all know that once disgnosed with the terminal illness that killed him never once appeared in public whining about his predicament, he just kept on working till he dropped.
I guess some journalists can't disguise their bias in their writing but at least do a bit of bloody homework first.
Sorry for rant but I do hate the Press where Freddie and Queen are concerned.
