There is something wicked coming.

The beginning of the NFL season is nearly upon us. Yes, the greatest sport in the world. (Go ahead, get yer knickers twisted, soccer fans) And with this event, out of the pits of hell come some of the most sinister and evil people, and they only come out at this time. Not gamblers, cheating refs, or couch potatoes... I'm talking about Fantasy Football players.

In the last couple of weeks, I've talked to a few of these "loons", some of which are tying to convince me to be "in their draft*".

*Draft - a room full of nerds wearing oversized jerseys (even though they're size small) discussing who is the better tight end.

Is this strictly confined to America? Or does this happen on an international scale? I'd like to think that since we're a young country, maybe you older folks (Norweigans, Russians, Brits, etc) grew out of that crap 400 years ago and we're just acting like kids.

Is there Fantasy Cricket? or Fantasy Futbol? Or do you just like to get pissy watching a good game like me and maybe everyonce in a while have some money on it?

The NFL is over rated....University Football (NCAA) is where it's at!! I can't wait for that to get started again!
And I don't think the Europeans have outgrown anything...have you ever seen their soccer games? My word, I mean I know we get into football and everything, but they will KILL people over a soccer game!
Maybe that's why American football won't serve alcohol in the stadiums past the 2nd half...give you a good hour or so to sober up before everyone congregates at the exits.

If it's the greatest sport in the world, why does virtually no one outside the US play it, and how come even then your season's only four months long?

I enjoy it really, but let's not get OTT (oh wait, you're American - as you were)...

As to your main point, it sounds a little geeky (especially wearing the uniforms - that's just sad) but I'd prefer it to the "soccer" fantasy games, where everyone can pick the same players.

There are a couple of fantasy games where you get together with some mates and auction all the players between you, so that only one person has X player, and someone ends up spunking their wad on their favourite player, only to have to make up his team with no-marks as a result.

Much more entertaining.

American football is more than 4 months long....it's called Arena Football in the off season. NCAA is 4 months long because the athletes are university students...not professionals with nothing better to do than play football. The theory is they are students first and athletes second (however, I will disagree with that at most universities). And I don't really think it's the greatest sport in the world...but it's one I enjoy watching and can understand. As soon as I can find someone willing to explain the ins and outs of soccer to me, I'm sure I'll like that just as much, as I already enjoy watching the games when I catch them but I get easily frusterated by the fact that I don't understand the game.
As for the "Virtual" stuff...I don't know what to make of it. A bunch of guys who couldn't play the game getting together to pretend to be involved in it? Sheesh! There's gotta be something better you could be doing with your time.

The only reason the NFL only has four months in a season is because it's a high contact sport. In other words, when you have 250 + lbs men hitting each other on a weekly basis, it will take a toll on your body. The career of an average NFL player only last about six years. One severe injury and your career is over.

Every sport in American I think has "seasons." Baseball season is spring through fall, basketball I have no clue, and American football starts what in about August and ends end of January?

I don't much care about sports so I dunno but I am interested in learning more about futbol/soccer, etc. Where I live it is extremely popular in highschool sports but then it just sort of stops there. My husband played soccer/futbol/football from the time he was about 6 until he graduated from highschool. Now he plays on some indoor teams but here it seems like after highschool, there is no where else to play except for some recreational stuff.

Rugby is equally high contact, played year round with minimal padding.

And your last sentence applies to any sport and many other careers too.

Ya know what. Maybe soccer is a fine sport. It's just that the kids that played the game while I was in school act like gaint douches. Hence my opinion of the game. These kids actually had the nerve to act tough around campus. I could understand it if they just had some fun with it and realized that it's just a game.
Perhaps there is a stereotype in this country that pins soccer as being a sport for children of upper middle-class parents who cart their little weiner brats all over town to play a game and show off in front of other families. The whole soccer mom thing is seen here in two different perspectives, one positive, one negative. Depends if one is claiming to be a soccer mom, or is being accused of being a soccer mom.

It also bugs me that a player can roll around on the ground after being bumped so that a penalty can be drawn against the opposing team. If you're really hurt, take it like a man and wait to be carted off the field. Otherwise, get your ass back in the game and get angry.

After all, the only true sports are mountain climbing, bull fighting, and auto racing. Everything else is just a game. Happy to have checked off one of these in my 23 years. Care to guess which one? ;-)

Soccer fans and players worldwide have ruined the chances of soccer being accepted in America. Get over it. Rational people do not need to have unanimous agreement of opinions (or even correct spelling) to feel complacent.

Everyone else feels the same way (except the players, it appears). But we're not going to stop watching it (or cease to see it as a sport at all) just because of thet (hopefully temporary) side issue.

After all, the only true sports are mountain climbing, bull fighting, and auto racing.

Mountain climbing is not a sport! Who's the world champion? What's the world record? It's just going for a walk with added equipment - as much a sport as running for a bus!

Bull fighting is animal cruelty dressed up as a cultural experience.

Auto racing is just getting sponsors to pay for R&D for the car companies.

>>Walking up a hill is not mountain climbing. Having a couple toes fall off while attempting to make it to camp. That's sport.

Bull fighting is animal cruelty dressed up as a cultural experience.

>>A dressed up Spaniard running the hell away from a pissed off bull. That's sport.

Auto racing is just getting sponsors to pay for R&D for the car companies.

>>Me taking the car that I have owned for five years and driven every day to one of the worlds most historic road courses and beating the pants off BMWs and Porsches. That's sport.

I'm just paraphrasing Ernest Hemingway. I believe Ernie way considering the danger aspect.

Anyway. there's still enough about soccer that makes me want to stay away. Now, place the goals a couple miles apart and make the game last a few hours.

THere's a distinct difference between a game and sport. I'm not even saying that there's a problem with games. I enjoy playing games. Just don't expect me to riot when the ref blows a call.

Answer me this: How come the NFL game in London sold out in less than 4 hours? I can get tickets to any "soccer" game.

To answer your questions:
1. Because the world athletes aren't talented enough compared to NFL athletes. There is an NFL Europe. It folded. Players sent to Europe know they're not good enough to make the NFL.

2. Because I want to watch Donovan McNabb, not the 6th string backup QB.

Brilliant! Go Papa Joe.

So I take it the Fantasy sport world is pretty much American. I hang my head in shame.

But I love the NFL. Our band is doing two Cowboy games this year and they pay very very nice.

American Football just plain sucks.

22 retards bumping onto each other for 4 quarters of 15 minutes each and a referee blowing the whilstle every 5 seconds and a countless number of time outs so the networks can go to commercials. Add all of that, and that means that you have to sit on your couch for 3-4 hours straight just waiting for the game to start only to hear that whistle being blown just and wait for everything to start over again. I guess the average obese NFL fan doesn't mind because it gives enough time to go to the kitchen and grab some more Doritos and beer. Technically it's a sport (if it can be called a sport) made for commercialism rather than entertainment and competitiveness.

i may get shot down for this but...

i would pay to see 15 NFL players without pads v 15 rugby players in a 2 way matchup,ie,NFL rules one game and rugby union rules in the other and see who would come out the victors,i doubt if it would be the *roided* up NFL crew somehow when it comes to the tackling, but i could be wrong..
ps,when is/was this NFL game in london.ive heard nothing about it?
the probable reason it sold out in a few hours is purely for the curiosity factor and i would point out that the WWE sells out over here much quicker than the NFL.i was at Summerslam at wembley stadium in 92 which sold out in less than 2 hours and that was before the internet revolution.
and before anyone jumps on my back about not knowing about NFL i must also point out that i used to go to wembley years ago to watch the monarchs play and have been a fan since the days of william "the fridge" perry.
rugby is the REAL mans sport though, not the jessies in their joan collins shoulder pads..
