This makes me very, very proud to be a Queen fan. Some rock artists can be called 'sir', but not our Brian May. He's a 'Doctor'!

He got a 'level two' pass, which means that he needs to enhance his thesis a bit more.

So, it was not a very convincing pass in my opinion...

But, it does show that he was treated as any other Phd student and that he really deserves it.

"not a very convincing pass"...... Do you have even the faintest idea what it takes to prepare a thesis?

... spent most of yesterday in a sort of "virtual party" to celebrate him; still feeling inordinately proud of his achievement ...

One of a kind, really - and the most precious kind. Gotta love him!

You've got to hand it to him:

a) He's filthy rich the rest of his life which has been full of accomplishments, particularly with his legendary reutation as one of the all-time greatest rock guitarists who worked in arguably the greatest band of all time.

b) He's roughly 60 years old(give or take).

c) He's not only earned an honorary doctrate, but he's been given the 'Commander British Empire' title which is an honor just shy of being knighted.

d) He's had a brilliant career in Astronomey which includes a recent book published that he co-wrote with 2 others including Patrick Moore himself.

e) And from all accounts Brian was one simple enough revision away from his PHD 30 plus years back when Queen's takeoff interrupted his astronomy career.

And yet he still went back and officially did the necessary work to officially get his PHD with proper work and procedure in his path. It's like an honor point to himself to earn the Dr. May title without strings of any kind attached. I truly doubt any other pro musician in history has so impressive an academic career.

Congrates to Brian, a true champion.

I don't say that it is not a very nice accomplishment.

And yes, I do know what I am talking about. Just finished my Master in computer science and am thinking about doing a Phd study as well.

Also, I tried to find out what the different levels of passing are in England. But, mr. May kindly explained it on his website and I have to redraw my previous statement: it was a convincing pass.

A PhD-thesis is examined by a scientific council. One of the requirements for a pass, is that it furthers the general scientific knowledge in some way. Therefore, ANY pass is an achievement worth noting!

If you read mr May's weblog you will see that - in England - this is not the case.

Level 7 'pass' simply means that you have to restart your research.

As far as I am aware of, in our country mr. Quinn (Netherlands), you either pass, or you don't. No such thing as a level?

I think the committee gets to include a judgemental phrase with a pass, but I'm not sure about that.

The level 6 pass means you have to engage in a two-man sack race to claim your PhD.

Good job Brian.

I would imagine that regardless of country, there are 3 types of results. One is perfect (which is rarely, if ever, given); more common is pass with some fixing. Brian has stated that is what he received, and I believe that is what the vast majority of all successful PhDs receive. Remember, it only takes one nit-picky examiner to find one tiny fault to keep it from being perfect.

The third option is failure. But to be honest, if you make it to the final exam stage, and you're adviser has allowed you to get that far, you have much bigger problems than a poorly written dissertation.
