In November it's 20 years ago this legendary album was released. U2 wouldn't be U2 if they didn't capitalize on the occasion...but they're no QP.
Because they're gonna release:

The Joshua Tree - 20th Anniversary Edition

1. Where The Streets Have No Name
2. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
3. With Or Without You
4. Bullet The Blue Sky
5. Running To Stand Still
6. Red Hill Mining Town
7. In God's Country
8. Trip Through Your Wires
9. One Tree Hill
10. Exit
11. Mothers Of The Disappeared

In 3 versions:

1. A digitally re-mastered standard album in a 'super' jewel case with a 24-page booklet.

2. A deluxe edition to include a 5" hardcover book with two wallets (at front and back) to hold two CDs (the remastered album + rarities) and the 24-page booklet.

3. A limited edition to contain everything in the deluxe edtion, plus one DVD of a Paris show from The Joshua Tree tour.

...now THAT's a commemorative release people!!

Sure, and Freddie couldn't? :p

Anyway, the early U2 releases (from th 80's) are indeed solid albums. After that, they completely lost it, Bono became a self-proclaimed politician, and the focus was no longer on the music.

This release indeed is a nice example of what the 30 years of ANATO could have been.

Was wondering the same thing. He will be banned, no-one can get away with the amount of abuse he's been putting this board through for the last month. xD

Yeah, this month we've been seeing a lot of bull From Ass' side...

But well... what we can do is not giving him the attention, although sometimes it's difficult not to. Specially with his bad taste

I find this album a lil bit overrated - U2 did better than that. But I love it anyway!

The Paris DVD sounds interesting, as I've never seen a full JT concert.

The Joshua Tree is probably one of the most overated albums in history. It got a lot of media hype thanks to 3 massive super hits, but it's indeed a weaker effort than U2's previous albums 'Boy', 'War', and 'The Unforgettable Fire'.

'Achtung Baby' deserves the praise as U2's most innovative and yet musically strong album. I still think 'Boy' was their best though.

not gonna argue with that one little bit.in fact i shall go a bit further,i brought the album when it was first released and once you get pass the first 3 songs it goes downhill quickly and shows Bono's pompous political side in all its horrible glory.it also hasnt aged all that well,it sounds like the overblown 80's Bon Jovi style US rock that was around at that time.
Achtung Baby was indeed a much better album for structured songs as was the experimental Bowie'ish/Low styled Zooropa

isnt innuendo an italian suppository?

im gonna ride the wild wind!

I was gonna ask William "what about Achtung Baby?" Great album. Plus "Pop" is kinda like Queen's Hot Space. Not anything at all like what we were expecting. Plus the last album wasn't that bad... Beautiful Day and Elevation are grrrrrreat!

Joshua Tree overrated? I don't know how you can say that. Didn't they win some grammys for that? Wasn't Steve Lillywhite producing? Wasn't Brian Eno involved on the whole album?

Then it can't be overrated!!!

Last album, BD and Elevation? I think you missed the year of 2004... ;)

Joshua Tree is excellent, but U2 themselves did better than that. I think if this album deserves all the credit it gets, then other U2 albums deserve MORE. I'd mention exactly the same albums Jingles mentioned. Especially "Boy".

It's a bit like the same with Queen's ANATO and other stuff from the 70s: ANATO is indeed a great album, it's actually my favorite... But most people tend to "ignore" the fact that albums like Queen II and ADATR are good enough to be compared to ANATO.

Does anyone notice a trend here?

It seems like bands make their best albums while they lack media exposure and promotion, and their popularity spreads by word of mouth from their cult fanbase.

Once they get their commercial breakthrough, the albums become less creative and more mainstream driven.

Well, Dan... I guess as they become more famous worldwide, the record deal notices they have potential to make lots of money and puts more pressure on them to make some stuff that would sell out more easily.

But we can't say it always happens like that, can we? Innuendo, All That You Can't Leave Behind... Great albums released when the bands were very famous and had released some pop crap.

I really liked 'All That You Can't Leave Behind', it went back to the roots.

'How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb' was too mellow IMO.

At first I wasn't really into HTDAAB. I kind of thought it was a couple of songs written to be hits and a few album fillers. But now that the Vertigo video stopped being aired everyday, the Vertigo tour is over and we've been hearing less about the "Vertigo coloured" U2 iPod, the album sounds quite good. ATYCLB is a lot more "mellow" than this one, in my opinion. But I actually like U2's mellow stuff. I only prefer the "punkish" stuff from Boy.

Holy crap, did I ever. Haven't heard it. AND produced by Steve Lillywhite again? Pardon my ignorance... Hey Raf! Is it greatness? Do I pick it up on the way home? I'm really wanting to now. Oh wait, I just read the two threads above me. Now I'm not so sure.

And by the way, Boy is one of my faves as well. Bono can be extreme, but the band is great.

So Jingles and Raf, do I get Bomb? Or should I look in the cutout bin.

Bomb is worth it for City of Blinding Lights alone. Consider Vertigo and All Because of You as bonuses.

I thought 'All Because Of You' was so lame and boring. It's not the worst song in the world, but it's so cliche of your average alternative pop ballad.

What strikes a nerve with me is that they left 'Fast Cars' out of the final cut of HTDAAB. It could easily be one of the best tracks on the album if they left it in.
