RUSH!

For the 5th time in their near-34 year history, Rush is nominated for a Best Rock Instrumental Award. Man, I hope they win it!

But...as history will show, they probably won't win. Here's how I know:

- in 1982, "YYZ" (probably their best instrumental) was nominated. It lost to The Police's "Behind My Camel".

- in 1991, they were again nominated, this time for "Where's My Thing? (Part IV, "Gangster of Boats Trilogy"). They lost again, this time to Eric Johnson's "Cliffs Of Dover".

- in 1994, their third nomination was for "Leave That Thing Alone". They lost to Pink Floyd's "Marooned".

- ten years later (2004) they were nominated again for "O Baterista", a Neil Peart drum solo. They were snubbed ONCE AGAIN, thanks to "Mrs. O'Leary's Cow" by Brian Wilson.

This year, they are up against Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Bruce Springsteen, and...*gulp*...METALLICA.

Yeah. Rush may not come out of this one alive lol

What do you guys think?

Okay let's not get started on who is better than who...besides I don't even know who Treasure Moment is, so i'm not going to say anything about them.

=EDIT:= Okay, i just looked them up...so now I'll say something.
Please, for the love of God, don't compare a band that has been around for three years to a band that has been around for three fucking decades. you will NOT win. Period.

At least, you don't have to listen to Geddy Lee's singing when they are doing instrumentals. ;-)

Go Foo Fighters for record and album of the year, best rock song, and best rock album!!!

As much as I like Rush, I highly doubt they will win a grammy. They're just not mainstream enough for major awards outside of Canada. That's not a bad thing, in fact I think it is better for them as it would mean that they would lose their uniqueness. It is nice of the Grammy dudes to think of Rush, though.

My guess is that the Boss will win this year. I haven't hear his nominated track, but he seems like a safe bet.

Sometimes I wonder if I really like their instrumentals because they're actually good, or if it's just because he's not singing.

Your guess was correct: Springsteen DID win the Best Rock Instrumental award.

And as for not being mainstream enough? I agree with your views. Although you and nearly every critic have that same issue with Rush; they're not mainstream enough to win awards or be a widely successful band in the US.

My opinion is that they do not need to be mainstream to be successful. Awards won't mean jack as long as you're still a force in rock and roll history, especially if you inspired many of today's artists.

Check the facts:
(all of these facts apply to their success in the United States)

- They have a combined 14 Platinum albums and 9 Gold albums (including live & compilation albums)

- They have 19 Top 10 Mainstream Rock singles.

- They are still an awesome live band (with memorable concerts such as Rio, Madison Square Garden, and a five-night sold-out set at Radio City Music Hall).

And it doesn't matter to them whether or not they win a Grammy. They are pretty much the Dan Marino of rock music; never got any fancy awards, but they changed the world around them.

(and as a bonus, They are also going back on tour in a couple of months. I'm gonna get to see Rush live June 9th at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois!!!)
