Just because he had less free time doesn't necessarily mean he didn't remain passionate about science.

But come to think of it, it seems he's just as busy now as he was 30 years ago, if not more so.

I say bollocks to your bullocks. Nobody finishes a 30 year old doctoral thesis in astrophysics because they don't have anything better to do. There are easier and more pleasant ways to fill one's empty retirement hours. Like 18 year old strippers, a la Mr. John Richard Deacon.
