Weeeeird stuff happened tonight. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeirrd.

I went out to the supermarket to buy a light sandwich and an apple juice (lol), and I was there, all happy, smiling all around, buying the sandwich and stuff, all nice.

I left the supermarket and made my way back to school. So, there was Yara, walking back to school in her silence and bringing the sandwich and the apple juice along with her.

Then I was crossing a square, which is between the market and the school, when suddenly, I don't know how many, there were a lot, kind of 8 or 9 people, I'd guess, it was a little group, and a tall fat guy, dressed as a rapper and stuff, came to me, clearly drunk or under the effect of some drug, and pushed me backwards while the other guys began to surround me. "Guys", not, because there were three women there in the group.

I just accepted as a fact of life and tried to make my way to school as usual. The tall fat guy would stand in front of me and kept me from going on, every time I tried.

He asked me, in a quite agressive tone, what kind of music did I play or sing, probably because they know I study there at School and perform in various places. He then asked me, before I could answer, if I was X (X being an expression I don't know the meaning of, it's kind of a urban idiom I just didn't know what the hell meant).

I was happy! Hahaha. I said, well, I play and sing many different kinds of music, but mainly classical music and opera.

The group laughed out loud, I found it great, it's good when people are happy. So, I just said, "well, I have to go now, before the guys close the gate there at school".

But, well, the guy wouldn't let me go (Bohemian!). All dark, no one around, I began to get a bit suspiscious. lol

FINALLY!

So, the guy went on and asked what kind of music did I enjoy listening to, because what I played was, you know what, he used all kinds of words.

Then, I said: "Well, with all due respect, I'd like to go back to school, since I have the right to move freely throughout the city, and I'm late, but later we can talk".

The guy really got mad! He said: "Are you a X? Or a Y?" (all words meant to define groups which identify themselves with certain kinds of music and life style).

I said, "well, I don't belong to any group, and I pretty much listen to what I want, I respect people's right to like whatever they like to listen to".

Then he got really angry because, according to him, he came to me very humble (!) and wanting to know what kind of music I liked, and I was arrogant and unwilling to answer.

I said, "well, if that's the way you see things, ok, I'm sorry, but now, really, I'd like to go back to school".

He kicked me in my leg and I fell flat on the ground.

I swear. I fell flat. I didn't know where I was. It was like...I was there, couldn't move because my back was hurting.

I think people in the surroundings happened to listen to the guys talking very loud and came to check what was happening. Well, they saw me there, found it curious, and just walked on.

The group began to talk, laugh, and have fun, and I was there, immobilized and whenever I tried to stand up, the guy would push me back to the floor with his giant foot.

Then, other people coming from the supermarket wanted to cross the square and saw it all. An elderly guy approached the group and began talking to them. The guys told their version of the story, about the humble stuff, and so on.

The old man didn't buy it (lol) for a sec and, to my surprise, very calm, he just said the guys to leave. I noticed that her wife, I assumed she was her wife, had just made a phone call, because she was there right by my side. The guys were all laughing, and having fun, and poking fun at the old man.

The police finally came, and I began to move with the help of a...81 year old lady (I found out her age afterwards).

The guys, which were very happy and full of joy, panicked and began to disband - no

Wow, Yara. You didn't do anything to deserve that and it must have been a terrible thing to go through. Obviously they were just out looking for a victim and you walked by. It could have been the next girl that walked by, but it was you.

There is no need for your sympathy regarding the treatment of your attackers. You are not personally responsible for their lives. There is no reason to feel sorry for them being locked up or to worry about how they will be treated in jail. They attacked you and should now be in jail. They are not fit for society.

I don't know any answers about how to deal with such a situation. There are too many options (talk or not talk to them; fight or not fight). You will probably be going over what you did and if you could have done anything differently, but don't worry too much about those things because it is over now. I think that it was not up to you to "handle" that situation. I think they were just out looking for violence.

But please do not walk alone again!

I also went to college at age 17 (I don't know how long you have been there), and I wasn't used to dealing with or thinking about potential crimes being committed against me. My roommate in my freshman year really taught me a lot of things like locking the door, looking through the peep hole, and never walking alone. It was sort of dangerous where I went to school - the campus was in a part of the city that was near poor people and there were quite a few incidents of students being attacked for their bicycles or whatever.

But even walking with other people, there can be problems. On this same campus I was walking with my then boyfriend and two big guys jumped out from behind a large garbage container and they had knives. My boyfriend saw the knives and understood the situation and reacted very quickly, pulling me and saying, "Run!" Well, we ran as fast as we could (he was holding my hand and pulling me, really - I'm glad he didn't leave me behind) and they stopped chasing us after a while. I was so glad for his fast reaction and that he wanted to protect me also. If it had just been me, I think I would have been too stunned to react like that. I probably would have been standing there looking at the guys with my mouth open. Anyway, we ran to the nearest dorm and called the police but the guys had already left the area by the time the police got there.

Most campuses have some sort of program (here in the USA) where you can call a number and get a volunteer (or paid) escort or a ride in a car to where you are going. Schools are a target I think because criminals know there are lots of young people (and young girls) to be easily found there.

I hope you are feeling better today. It must have been quite upsetting and shocking.

Well I was beaten (beated ?) just once, when I was maybe 14, but I still remember it 14 years later. It was actually the reason why I changed from 50 kgs of skin to 90 kgs of muscles, now nobody dares to hit me :)
Well but that's probably not a solution for you.

Well what to say ? The world is full of aggressive bastards, I hope you never meet some of them again.
Try to have a nice weekend

My goodness Yara this incident was beyond weird. Freakish and terrifing is more like it. Thankfully you are alright. My mother has been robbed twice while walking by herself. The first time in 1988, the second in 2006. Unfortunately their are far too many cowards in the world who will victimize a female if she is by herself. So you didn't do anything wrong. I'm a man, but if i see someone i don't like the looks of walking towards me i will sometimes cross the street. You must be shaken up now but you will be ok.
