*Another One Bites The Dust, if you couldn't decipher it :)

I just think it's pretty astounding. Listening to the song, it really sounds like synths are being used, but obviously they weren't. But it leads to two questions...

a) Do you think John wrote the song just wanting to experiment with other music-making techniques

or

b) Do you think he made it like that attempting not to resort to synths?

I'd phone him but he never answers my calls anymore.

From "The Game" onwards.
All their albums prior to Game always made a point to state "No Synthesizers!" on the sleeves, more or less.

For songs like "The Show Must Go On", "Was It All Worth It", and "Don't Try So Hard", sure.
And it works pretty well in "Save Me". And for most of the stuff on "Made in Heaven".

As for the rest of the time, it usually sounds dated and shitty. Fuck synths, it wouldn't have hurt Queen to have waited for the technology to catch up a bit. I cringe when I hear "One Vision" sometimes.

I made a note in another topic, and I think some songs don't need synths. Save Me could easily have done without. I don't mind One Vision, but it works just as well with pianos (at least when I play the synth part on piano). Also "Play The Game" is the worst culprit. Sounds awful! The live non-synth version on Rock Montreal is so much better!

Who gives a damn?
We don't live in the 70's anymore. As long as it sounds good, synths are OK

Right on. Every instrument is a new timbre; it's just a matter of finding the right notes to go with it.

That is SO wrong. Freddie's voice, Brian's guitar, their songwriting, the tongue in cheek, the anthemic quality of many of their songs... those are fundamental parts of Queen. Not Synths!

I have nothing against synths (I love The Game and Hot Space) when they are properly used and if the music is actually any good but I think that Pre-synth-Queen kicks Synths-Queen's ass any day. Specially live.

Synths may have allowed them to compose and arrange their music easier in the latter years but they made them a bit lazy as well.

The latest and greatest example of this is the synth sound on SINT (hmm). The good thing is that it is only predominant in the first half of the song and the second part rocks very hard :).

Back on topic: yes, I think it's amazing that there are no synths in AOBTD. For many years I thought there were some in there.

This is yet another proof of Queen's musical craftmanship in a deceivingly simple and radio friendly song. Another good example is Bicycle Race, I think.

No. I don´t think it´s amazing. With this statement in mind: Tom Morello of RATM. He produces some serious strange shit with his gear. However, with all the pedals and shit they plug into their guitars I think they turn them more or like into Synths...

I think the backwards piano and such just proves that they were quite aware of how other things sounded backwards in that song ;)

Is this a joke? Then it's a good one. I'm new here you know, so... anyway I think it says in the credits of The Game that an Oberheim synth was used on the album, and there's obviously one on AOBTD... again, maybe I'm not getting the joke here..

Still I agree, it was a big change away from the lush 70s no synths approach, but also a necessary change into the 80s...
