Why is it that the Dutch people are always so gentle and polite, courteous, calm, respectful of others, and generally pleasant and considerate at all times, whereas here in the UK we have so very many rude, loud, brash, aggressive, obnoxious, ignorant people, who will think nothing of butting into your conversation???

These loathesome individuals appear NEVER to have been taught basic social skills or basic everyday ettiquette, and think it perfectly normal and acceptable to be that way. WTF!!!

I've NEVER encountered a rude or discourteous Dutch person, while my own country is full of ignorant, rude, LOUD people that make me and others ashamed to be British.

God, we have some horrible sods here. It used to be thousands of them. Now it's nearing millions!!!

Does anyone else want them????? New Zealand... surely you could take a few hundred thousand of them?! PLEASE.

Please come and take them all away. Starting with a few people here.

Go on then..... tell me how I fit this bill too.....

Greg, I feel your pain.

/rant mode ON

It seems to me here in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, because of our oil boom in this province, all of the businesses and stores here have been hit extremely hard for employees.
Even my company McDonald's has been getting hit hard for managers at most all locations from what I hear from our consultant at head office, as some have been quitting in alarming numbers.

And cos of that, all the types of people the businesses pretty much didn't want to hire for any customer service-type positions years ago before (young immature teenagers, very mentally or physically disabled people, foreigners still studying ESL, etc etc - you get the idea) are now being hired in droves way faster than before (almost pretty much on the spot!), and these are the type of people that are either so bloody slow, rude or just plain stupid when it comes to dealing with others efficiently (if at all).

Because of their ineptness to do even a minimally acceptable job most of the time, so many people are getting frustrated with the degraded quality of overall services here (from both privately owned AND gov't (Federal or Provincial) businesses!) taking it out on others.
Edmonton is surely becoming Rudemonton more and more every day, and it pisses me off.

Even the city transit bus drivers I've noticed are getting more rude, especially the older drivers. They tick off so easily now, and it's not professional at all. They do NOT need to berate other transit riders in front of the others, and now it happens quite a bit, especially on the express routes I've noticed.

And meanwhile, city hall are handling how our tax dollars are used very inappropriately.
I can't understand how they can spend millions of our dollars in the double or triple digits on fixing up certain roads that not many people use to begin with, when our transit bus service really needs more help than some minor cracked up piece of pavement.
That's one example of many issues at the moment that are pissing us Edmontonians off a lot.

Our mayor isn't an idiot really, but the city council members we elected are, big time.

We tried this already, dude.

Do you really want another Australia? I sure as hell don't. The place is filled with emos, skater boys, wiggers and car-obsessed sport worshipping troglodytes.

If I had the money I'd probably jump ship.

Try being a hippy with short hair and a fat bank account.
I just wind up sounding like a hypocrite all the time.

You realize that Pim Derks is Dutch, right? As am I, and quite a significant portion of this forum, actually. And one thing most of the above CAN'T be accused of, is being kind to you.

As for the problem with the English...could it be centuries of isolation on an island leading to inbreeding?

If you want kind, try the Romanians. If you're a guest they feed you until you drop dead and then they pour everything that they have and has alcohol in your glass(es)... :-))

Tis weird, I always thought the British as (falsely) polite and treating you with that condescending smile, and cooking fabulous dishes etc... It might be the Victorian literature to that... well, u know... And the Dutch... I dunno... rude 'n' everywhere? :-P

but I could slightly quote Mr. Higgins for that matter

Why can't the British be more like me? huh??

Anyway, on a more serious matter... These generalisations have been fashionable for some time now and have only hurt nations... Though I like Africa, for the lions and flies. :-)

Fuse-wire was invented by two Dutchmen fighting over a penny. Two taxis crashed in Amsterdam and 30 passengers in each car were injured.

You forgot that we use toilet paper twice. Why throw it away if one side is still clean?

Two Dutchmen who run into each other will argue about religion, three will start a new church.

And then there are the famous words of an exasperated British merchant: "The Dutch are the only people who can buy from the Jews, sell to the Scots, and are on the better end of both deals".

GB... Hellfire, your first point is TRUE.

Your second point is TRUE too. Although... our island does now comprise several million people from countless other corners of the globe.

But... universally speaking... every nation on Earth 'inbreeds'. How can it not.

And I know that was 'Earthly' speaking, not universally speaking. But I'm sure it must be the same for most other planets; they too can only 'inbreed' as it were.

Wow! I made two more or less correct statements in a single day! I think that might be a personal record...

But... universally speaking... every nation on Earth 'inbreeds'. How can it not.

True, to an extent. However, more geographically isolated regions tend to have more inbreeding. Parts of Europe had laws in the middle ages, making it a crime to marry someone from your own village to prevent this inbreeding. On the other hand, many cultures like the ancient Egyptians believed that incestuous marriage (within Pharaoic households, that is) helped the development of the human species, which is partly true: mutations take place more quickly. However, so did genetic disease, as can be deduced from sculptures of Pharaohs with deformed heads, and large amounts of documented cases of genetically maimed Pharaohs (I name Akhenaten as just one example).

And I know that was 'Earthly' speaking, not universally speaking. But I'm sure it must be the same for most other planets; they too can only 'inbreed' as it were.

Well, yes, if you take this to the limit of its philosophical implications, that is true. But usually, 'inbreeding' is reserved as a term for the reproduction of two members of the same species with a close genetic relationship (according to Old Testamental law, which influenced European law to a great extent, any family relationship closer than second cousins is regarded as incestuous).
