From "What records" promotional email:

EMI have announced. well they have told ne, that they will be releasing a Queen singles Box Set. The Box Set volume 1 will be limited to 10,000 copies and will contain 13 cd singles.

Overview

THIS IS A ONE OFF MANUFACTURING ORDER OF 10K.

Welcome to QUEEN: THE SINGLES COLLECTIONS, 4 releases 35 years in the making and spanning no less than sixteen albums; from the debut LP, Queen, in 1973, to the last project with Freddie Mercury, Made In Heaven, in 1995, and beyond. Vol 1, the first of four, kicks off with the first single, 'Keep Yourself Alive', and runs through to 'Don?t Stop Me Now' from 1979. Box 2 will continue the story into the mid 1980s, and so on. Ultimately, the four boxes will offer every one of Queen?s singles to have made the top 40 anywhere in the world (with the exception of 'Keep Yourself Alive' which is included because it was the first ever single).

On July 6th 1973, EMI released the first Queen single 'Keep Yourself Alive'. In the UK it is the first and only track to be taken from the band?s debut album Queen. The record attracts some interest in England but gets little airplay, and so fails to appear in the singles chart. EMI?s promotion team are given feedback from the radio programmers that the song doesn?t fit into their play-lists, because, apparently, ?It takes too long to happen? ? presumably referring to its 30-second guitar intro (now widely regarded as one of its most intriguing features!). In crafting the band?s second single, Seven Seas Of Rhye (from Queen II), the band decide to make everything happen in the opening seconds? ?Everything, including the kitchen sink,? as Brian would later quip. Evidently, it works; this time the single picks up immediate airplay and charts in the first week of release: in February 1974 Queen achieve their first UK and worldwide hit.

From this moment on, Queen hit singles become a virtual certainty, with the release of each successive album, each one musically a departure from the last, and, significantly, featuring compositions from all four band members. Queen is to date the only group whose members have all written No. 1 hits around the world.

Packaged in a flip top box the 13 CD singles feature a selection of faithfully reproduced cover artwork from around the world.

What an absolute load of old shit.
This sounds rubbish.
Where is the booklet we all expected?
Why isn't it in the (as far as I know) originally planned format the Freddie Box Set took?
I bet Greg Brooks is pissed off!

There had better be some serious "must have" in this set otherwise, based on information so far, this is one release I won't be buying. I'll need to see a tracklist before forking out £35.

Laughing uncontrollably here. If this is true and, something's telling me it is, simply because it's JUT the kind of thing QPL would sanction (same old material - high price - more than one release to complete the set), it's just a continuation of the same old pattern and mistakes made time and again.

Here's looking forward to 2009 then....

Pisstake surely? QP really going to fuck the fans over yet again? One would have to wonder what it is Greg Brooks does (besides pointless memorabilia books - who is that actually aimed at by the way?). How is any fucking way is this release a good idea?

Erm... it was supposed to be a 10 CD boxset featuring material from all the singles inc. b-sides and different edits. I was expecting what it has been claimed to be for quite some time - not crappy reproductions of the 7"s with about 2 tracks on each CD and then be expected to wait around for a year to see part 2. The original concept would have enabled some interested bits to be released - this is no longer happening.

yeah and from memory the edits and b-sides should be on the next collection shouldn't they as that's when all the non album b-sides come in.In my opinion the price is very reasonable and i for one won't grumble about it.

I think the interesting bits will be saved for anthology type sets.

Great - I love it then. Suddenly a boxset of 2 track CDs seems appealing. No.. wait....

You are still getting the same tracks, only in a different format than what you expected.

Do you honestly expect those anthology type sets to see the light of day in your lifetime?

Four installments of pointless single boxes means four more Christmas season for QP to come up with a new load of (old) bullshit to peddle us...

But hey, at least this way they can recycle all the unsold SINT and C-Lebrity singles straight into this series. ;)

Yeah, eil.com sent me an email regarding this load of crap. Didn't we have something similar back in '88 with the 3" cd singles.

As usual, no booklet or anything, just refer to the box of trix poster for the singles artwork as they have clearly done hear.

I dunno really when we are going to see "proper" archive releases, i suppose Greg will be back soon to give us an answer as to why QP went down this particular road past the Cash Cows.

They can fuck off if they think i am going to fork out £200.00+ for this shite.

Not really.
I expected them to feature all the singles (not just the ones that "got to top 40 somewhere in the world") along with all the edits and extended versions.

I know somebody over at QOL thinks this is better than the 10 cd boxset idea , but this is something that could just as easily have been compiled at home!

QP does have a slight possibility of redeeming themselves by releasing the later singles as "12 inch" versions, but that isn't going to happen... They just have to put the more familiar standard versions in there instead.

I guess all this just goes to show that one can never set their expectations on QP low enough... They can always pass under the bar like a world-class limbo artist.

I doubt all 4 boxsets will be released. Seeing as we still 'need' Greatest Video Hits III, 13 other albums as DVD-A releases, Brian at Albert Hall 1998, BBC Sessions etc. etc.

Don't wanna flood the market.

I have to say, if all it is is a pretty box, and they don't bother to at least include the odd unique foreign territory edit of this or that, then there doesn't seem to be much point in me buying it. Which is rather disappointing because I was looking forward to at least having the fiction of something marginally different on it as a thin justification for spending the money.

Ooh goody, I can pay £38 for a slightly better quality version of a 'mix tape' that I made myself 20 years ago, and a poster of cover art which will advertise Greg Brooks' new book.

I'm glad that QPL pay Greg Brooks to go through the archives to catalogue such gems as Bohemian Rhapsody, killer Queen, etc...which we'd never get to hear if they didn't dig them out
