You are very nice calling it "filler", I would said "crap". I can´t understand how a band like Queen could have songs like that in an album... specially if is placed after IT¨S A HARD LIFE...

Jesus..

being a Queen fan is to love everything they do because is Queen? even if is crap?... the works is a great album except Break free and Prowl... the rest is classic and great.

you dont have an idea of how much I love Queen (15 years of love now), but I do have a common sense that says to me that even them, the greatest band on the planet, made crap songs, crap albums and crap shows.

 wake up, nothing is perfect.

Because there's a god.

If you want something longer, check out the 6 1/2 minute extended version. Pretty soon you'll be WISHING the song was shorter...

Other than "Hammer to fall" the entire "Works" album is an embarrassment. “Man on the prowl” is a remake of “Crazy little thing called love” and should have been left off to begin with.

Because after 2 minutes they noticed that they were recycling material (again?) and gave up.

A very short album.

They should have included I Go Crazy and There Must be more to life than this, maybe something else left in the vaults or something that Roger was working on for Strange Frontier and it could be a classic album.

Radio GaGa, I want to break free, Hammer to fall and It's a Hard Life were great singles.
Machines is one of Queen's better album tracks from the 80's.

I used to get bored with this album. I didn't like it at all. Suddenly it hit me and I started to like the overall sound of the album and I really got into the Machine vs Human "concept" or "theme" in the album's production. Now I enjoy it a lot, even if I don't listen to it a lot.

Listen to it after months of being into 70's Queen and listening to long epics, layered guitars and all that and it WILL sound refreshing to your ears.

Still, too damn short.

Edit: I rambled talking about the album but forgot to address the actual topic. I don't particularly like Man on the Prowl, it IS filler but it is still enjoyable and it is sandwiched between two of the best tracks of the album (at least on the CD).

There is nothing worse than when an artist rips themselves off. It shows boredom and a total lack of imagination and inspiration. The Works is their second worse offering ever. The entire thing sounds sterile, flat and cold. They are four individuals simply going through the motions and recycling old ideas.

  1. Radio Ga, Ga is a complete joke and one of their most overrated songs.
  2. Tear it up is a remake of We will rock you
  3. It’s a hard life is a remake of Play the game
  4. Man on the prowl is a remake of Crazy little thing called love
  5. Machines is nauseous, repetitive & a complete bore!
  6. I want to break free crawls along at a snails pace. The synth solo sounds like someone taking a shit.
  7. Keep passing the open windows is a remake of Don’t stop me now.
  8. Hammer to fall is the only good song on this scrap heap.
  9. Is this the world we created? is a remake of the live version of Love of my life
.

I like the album, personal taste and all that. I even like Man On The Prowl, not their best work but an enjoyable song. I'm not a big fan of comparing, take every song on individual merit. The album is what it is and it's fun. The only song I really don't think is that cracky is ITTWWC. It's just ok. I think I want to Break Free is great Queen pop and a great vocal from Freddie. Machines, great song, love listening to it.

Oh my god, you're right!!!!  It's like the cabaret version of Crazy.  All that's missing is a cheap cigar and a satin jacket.  Thanks Lou, you've ruined BOTH songs for me now... or enhanced them!!!

Awesome.

Personally I have always thought that Man On the Prowl is the worst thing (outside of a couple of Flash gordon instrumentals) ever committed to vinyl by the band.

It's obvious they were trying to build on Crazy Little Thing, but it's just a dreadful tuneless mess of a song.

I disagree with the poster who says the works is a crap album though.  Yes, some of the songs are derivative of others but they were trying for something that sounded like a Queen album after Hot space didnt and it worked.

I like the album - It's not the greatest ever, but it's not poor.  I prefer it to The Miracle and I think its less variable than a Kind Of Magic.

But Man On the Prowl was so bad that I used to skip it even when I was litening to vinyl.
Trust me, for a track to make me get up off the couch and go to the trouble of lifting the needle to the next track... must have been bad.

I just checked my itunes...  number of times Man On the Prowl has been played... zero!
So I have never actually got to the end of it.  Even when in shuffle mode, if it comes on... I skip past it.

The only other Queen track I skip EVERY time is Delilah.

(Still Burnin is the first of the new album to be subjected to the skip button - but not every time)

Back in the ´84, "The Works" was made for vinyl format. The space in this format is limited.
