I was in Newcastle over the weekend and an older fellow at a bar approached me cos he noticed my Queen NOTW t shirt and spoke to me a bit about a gig he went to late 70s in Newcastle and how amazing it was. He also said he had a big argument with a fellow writer of a small Newcastle newspaper who without any grounds but personal taste, went about slagging Freddie's live performances in an article, saying that Freddie couldn't replicate his studio voice live. What annoyed him is the guy had never seen Queen live! I asked him what date, but he couldn't remember exactly... said he thought it was 79 and it was near xmas... def late 70s.
I couldn't speak long (gf was hungry and giving me evil eye), but he told me Freddie and the guys were great at the gig he went too, and the guy who slagged them off had to eat his words as he had to do a review of the gig. I didn't get time to find out what newspaper it was, but I'm posting to see if any Geordie's might remember... long shot I know. There must have been 2 reviews... before and after.
I'm guessing it was either 3rd or 4th December 79... if it was Freddie was in good shape... especially the 2nd night.
I don't think Freddie would ever have known about this article, but does anyone know of any instances were Freddie did react to articles/reviews and perhaps use this as fodder for his live sets? Maybe as a reply of sorts to such bollocks.
(Ha Ha... the guy probably saw Freddie sing one of his best live sets ever IMO... lucky it wasn't one of the poorer 79 Japan gigs he was to review!).
