Hey all.

Does anyone have a link to that Roger interview answers the question of he and Brian calling themselves Queen, and says something along the lines that when you have all the surviving active members of a band, how could you not use the name?

Thanks!

That's right and that's what he meant - Brian and himself.

Then I wonder what the hell are Paul and Ringo waiting to bring The Beatles back.

Yes, that's the jist of what Roger said.  I'm not offering judgment here in my original post.  Just asking if a clip of this interview is anywhere--it's on video, my brain is just a sieve.

It is very clear "surviving"cos they are alive I guess and "active" cos John is clearly retired from music, that leaves you Roger and Brian, very simple man.

Actually to get you all's facts correct you all need to know what a founding member of a group is.    The founding member owns the rights to the name of a group.     Usually this is the person that sticks around while all the other members change...again in theory but 9 times out of 10 this is the case.     In the case with The Beatles...John Lennon was the founding member.     This would not mean that The Beatles could not continue since it was John Lennons group.     Like Queen is Brian May's group.     Other examples would be that Led Zeppelin is Jimmy Page's group, Black Sabbath is Tony Iommi's group, Fleetwood Mac is Mick Fleetwood's group, Metallica is Lars Ulrich's group, etc.

Like Queen is Brian May's group

It is?  "Smile" was perhaps, and May may well believe Queen was "his" group,  but I think the general public would beg to differ.

Roger, I am almost certain, did not say "founding" member.  So Alex's remark is sorta irrelevant to my own request.

People would almost literally kill Paul if he did.  Ringo would probably get off easier...

But, to be fair, it's not quite the same than in the case of Queen, since The Beatles had broken up by the time John died.  So it would kind of be to take advantage of the fact that John could not stop them from reuniting or something... Plus, John and Paul had their problems and public arguments... most people think they actually hated one another.  There never was such a problem between Freddie and the other members of Queen.

How could Brian May own the name Freddie came up with?.

Is arguable that John founded The Beatles... he founded The Quarrymen.  And Stuart Sutcliffe came up with The Beetles, then John changed it...

Says who?

There were many cases of bands that when split had problems because one of the members registered the name as "his" even though he wasn't the "founder" of that band neither it was him that came up with the name they used, which happens a lot - one can found a band and have another different member of the band to name it. Whose band is it?

The Cure was called Malice (probably Robert Smith's idea), then Porl Thompson suggested Easy Cure (changed to The Cure right before the first album) and it stuck although Robert said he didn't like it. It's Robert Smith's band but Porl (who is Robert's brother-in-law btw) "owns" the name?

If it wasn't for Freddie, Queen would be still Smile.

And if Brian or Roger "own" the Queen name, why John doesn't too? Because he's retired? That's plain silly.

David Gilmour owns the rights to the name Pink Floyd, although he came last.

Brian Jones founded The Rolling Stones and he was fired from "his" band by his bandmates due to drug / alcohol abuse.
