To New Member:
Queen has only had four members since they began their recording career:
Freddie Mercury (lead vocals, piano), Brian May (guitar, backing vocals),
Roger Taylor (drums, backing vocals), and John Deacon (bass). They also
all play keyboards on their albums in the 80s (no synthesizers were used
in the 70s). In addition to their primary instruments, all four have
played additional various instruments on some songs.
When Freddie first changed his name to Freddie "Mercury" he considered
spelling Freddie with a "Y" for about 4 seconds then changed his mind.
In the very early days, Queen went through 3 bass players (one of them
only for one show) before John Deacon joined them in late February of
1971. (Queen had first performed live on June 27, 1970.)
During the 1980's there were also several keyboard players who accompanied
them on their tours, Fred Mandel, Morgan Fisher, and Spike Edney.
