Hello !

Could you tell me if Freddie's home-made recordings of playing piano works of Chopin and other famous composers survived ?
I heard that the tape was re-recorded with something new and the songs were generally-speaking deleted.

Greetings !
Martin

The Garden Lodge tapes have survived and you can hear officially released bits on the Freddie Solo Collection box set.

Thank you very much for your time and answers. That really made me happy as there is a chance that one day we might hear those pieces played by Freddie along with the Phantom sessions.
Do you think that is is worth writing to Sir A.L.Webber about the tapes and the possibility of a future release ?

Again, thank you very much !
Cheers !

They are certainly not of good enough quality to release them properly....and it wouldn't be up to Webber anyway.

Then what is?

It's a question Queen fans have wanted to have answered for years, in the interest of having a new Queen product available that competes with the recent releases of Genesis, Springsteen, Yes, etc.

This is exactly the problem why we keep getting crappy official releases. Because the interesting stuff is "not of good enough quality".

Why do you QP employees think sites like Queenzone (or TheTradersDen, or DimeADozen ....) are so popular ?
Don't you think that the fans should decide what is good enough quality for them for a 20+ years old recording ?

Seriously, I'd buy the Reactions tape, or the Hectics tape or the 1984 demo tape, and I wouldn't care about the quality. But some people will simply not understand it and instead of it release all the same stuff all over again with different packaging and I guess they're scratching their heads why are their "exciting products" ignored by general public.

And eventhough the time did pass

and memories tired lied,

and we will all be turned to dust

I can't believe that the Phantom sessions material can be of any worse audio quality than, say, The Hectics live material or the Garden Lodge tapes stuff that was happily included on the FM Box Set.

Are we expected to believe that when Freddie recorded some material for Andrew Lloyd Webber either as an 'audition', or  in the anticipation that Freddie was going to sing it on a final version, that these run throughs (even at an early stage)were not of sufficient importance to be recorded at least semi-properly with, say, a quality mic and a portable DAT machine (if not probably in a studio, or Lloyd Webber's home studio facilities) ??

I have rehearsals and gigs of my old bands from 20 years ago, recorded on a C90 tape with a jobby Maplins microphone sat on the other side of the room, which still remain eminently listenable (at least in audio quality terms if not performance!)

At least we know that the official line is consistent:

Earls Court  release?- "oh Lord no, there's a couple of frames where the camera is too much on brian and the colour goes funny for a few seconds"
Hammy Odeon 79 release? - "goodness gracious no, there's no multi track to remix part of God Save The Queen so we couldn't possibly release a perfectly suitable stereo version"

etc..etc..etc...

Can somebody please enlighten me about the "connection" between Freddie Mercury and Andrew Lloyd Webber ?

I have read this topic being bandied about here (e.g. in the above post) and I am curious to know more.

They shagged.

Nah, I think Freddie tried out on some Phantom of the Opera tracks sometime in 87 or some such.  JSS or someone could enlighten you more.
