Technically, the term for these discs is 'pirate' instead of 'bootleg'.  A bootleg doesn't contain previously officially released material, while a pirate does.

Technically, you might be right, when it comes to records. But isn't the term 'bootleg' another word for 'something made illegal' (that is without paying taxes or copyrights'?

Hey there,

from "A Kind Of Magic" there exist picture dics from the album and from the Maxi-Single (althought there's also the official one). The pirate shows Kurgan in front and the backpicture is the same like on the sleeve. I also came across two "Wembley 86" PD's from 2004. They had a very similar layout like the official DVD set .

regards
W.

Short answer, yes.  But the term was initially used to refer only to alcohol, where it was a given that a profit was being made.  With music, on the other hand, there is such a plurality of categories of unofficial items (including those that aren't made for profit) that the terminology has become necessary - i.e. pirate, counterfeit, bootleg, and roio.
