At the time of the Sly Stallone film 'Rocky 3'  (summer of '82) i recall reading an interview with the lead singer of Survivor, (who, of course, recorded the classic theme, 'Eye of the Tiger') in a national newspaper, commenting on the success of the song. In the interview he declared that: 'We beat Queen out for this gig', obviously suggesting that their majesties were shortlisted as candidates for the theme.
Their sterling work on 'Flash Gordon' must have put them in the frame and one can only imagine what they would of come up with to enhance the film. No disrespect to Survivor's superb effort but at the time i thought it would have been brilliant for Queen to 'get the gig'

I heard that it was going to be "another one bites the dust"

I read somewhere that Stallone had used Another One Bites the Dust as preliminary music, but I don't remember if that was used to choreograph the fights, during the Editing process or if it made it to test screenings.

I don't know if he had the intention of using AOBTD for the final cut or not. I recall reading somewhere that either him or some studio exec thought the song was a bit slow and that the fact that the song was 2 years old didn't help.

Queen were asked and submitted 'Las Palabras de Amor'.

Sly had to choose between that and Eye of the Tiger.

Someone in Survivor is related to Stallone, which is maybe why they got the job and not Queen.

At least that's the answer I got when I raised this point a while back.

Al Pacino was invited to play Rocky originally, but refused; so just few years later Al and AOBTD had met in 'Sea of love'. What a sweet revenge!

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Sylvester Stallone asked for permission to use the song but was denied so he wanted Survivor to make a song that emulates AOBTD and Eye of the Tiger was the result. Like some guy said in this topic already, a dude in Survivor was his cousin or something like that.

Are you sure? Stallone was adamant from the beginning that the Rocky character would be played by himself and no one else. Atleast that's what I read.
It would have been awesome if Queen had composed the score for the movie. Watching myone of my fav movie series wiht the fav band playing in the background, that would have been incredible!

imo queen did great job on flash gordon and highlander. i'm sure their song(s) would fit with rocky movie. maybe we would get:
