Well, maybe it wasn't inevitable, but –– lo! –– I've made one anyway.

As of this very point in the time of the universe, it is highly unlikely that anyone in the Western World under forty years old has not heard of Lady Gaga. Why? Because she's fucking everywhere. Her ridiculous music videos are all anyone ever talks about, she's at every music awards show, she's at Target, she's all over the internet. Her album covers stare at you when you walk into any music store. She has a screaming, rabid fanbase consisting of people who have dubbed themselves "Little Monsters" and will rip you to ribbons if you so much as suggest that their Precious Gaga possesses any negative qualities whatsoever (merely insinuating via YouTube-comments that she's no more than another Fake and Board-Room Manufactured Pop Star, for instance, will elicit responses such as "OMGGGG FUKCZ YOU BITCH YOUR JEALOUSE OF HER DONTT YOU DARE TALK ABOUT GAGA LIKE THAT OMG MOMMA MONSTER I LUV YOUUUUU FUCK THE HATERZZ"  from people on YouTube with usernames like "GaGazLilMonstr" and "AleAlejandro1986.") She has expressed the quintessential Pop Star Support of the LGBT community and goes to every length possible to prove that she is an artist who Pushes The Envelope and Blazes New Trails in the music industry. She has been compared to Elton John, Madonna, Grace Jones, Bowie, and –– LE GASP –– Freddie Mercury –– and she actually claims to draw inspiration from aforementioned artists (by singing about Disqo Stiqs, Obsessive Stalker Relationships and the like). Whereas artists like Katy Perry and the ever-shitty Ke$ha have one or two hits and then fizzle out into nothingness, The Media is convinced that Lady Gaga has staying power and is gonna be here for years to come, and considers her "Our Generation's Michael Jackson."

So, fellow Queenzoners, what say you? Does this strange wumin have enough talent and personality to become as huge as her so-called influences? Is this "Bad Romance" and "Alejandro" business as huge as she's ever going to get, so it's only downhill from here, or can she only get bigger? And of her "wacky, out-there presence," do you believe it's fake and contrived or genuine? What other things have you to say about her? Or do you just not give a shit?

I personally believe that she does have genuine talent (her piano playing and singing are actually very good) and her songs are alright, but that her persona is somewhat-cultivated and fake; a bad, bubblin' Brew of every major Pop Icon/Superstar from the past forty years –– a little of MJ's dance skillz and catchy songs here, some of Madonna's fem-bot outrageousness there, throw in some Britney Spears/Christina Aguilera sluttiness, a pinch of Bowie's mysterious Glam, a dash of Freddie's humble flamboyance –– add earworm melodies, semi-provocative outfits, quasi-shocking performances/music videos, too much media attention, blindly devoted fans, Good Connections In The Music Industry and meaningless glittering song lyrics, hit frappé, serve Lady Gaga immediately after preparing. But that's just me.

PS: Please recognise I'm asking for opinions about Lady Gaga as a musician and public figure, which is to say that any comments like "HEY DON'T SHE HAVE A DIQ" or "AIN'T SHE A HERMAPHRODITE" add absolutely nothing to the potential discussion and are just obnoxious and pointless. So is any mention of her vagina (or lack thereof) (Jake). If you want to start your own thread to discuss Lady Gaga's Genitals And Reproductive Organs (though I don't know why you'd want to), feel free to do so.

TL;DR –– LADY GAGA. DISCUSS. NO MENTION OF HER DIQ OR LACK THEREOF PLZ

I didn't quite read all your post *cough* .....

Anyway... I kind of like her music and yes, she is very talented. And the weird weird videos.. they work for me.

I guess many people don't like her or are afraid to like her (pushing it too far here maybe) because they don't
want to be the kind that enjoy this new generation of comercial music. Who will admit this though, right?
imo, she's not just another one of them; she's good and very original. Not the best but who said she is?

And thumbs down to people that judge the person, not the music. You (on this forum) of all people should know better ;d

Hence my "TL;DR" at the end. I can acknowledge when I'm being too verbose (or when I know there will be people who don't feel like reading all of what I'm rambling about). But thanks for letting me know.

Woodie wrote: And thumbs down to people that judge the person, not the music. You (on this forum) of all people should know better ;d

Well, since she's putting both aspects of herself out there (music and persona), as opposed to being a very private-type person who keeps mainly to themselves aside from the music they make, it's only logical that people will judge both. But there are plenty of people (myself) who think her music and music videos are decent, but are just not entirely convinced by the personality she puts out. Or there are others who just aren't into her style. Doesn't mean they're judging The Person and not The Music, it just means they like certain things about her and not others.

I have to admit it with a bit of shame, 'Bad Romance' and 'Poker Face' are quite damn catchy, but overall I don't get all the hype about Lady Ga Ga.

People make all this fuzz like she's the best thing to happen to pop music since Michael Jackson released 'Thriller', and seriously it's not. It's just more generic mainstream pop, and aside from the 2 songs I mentioned above, I don't see how it's way above the rest of mainstream music.

Now when it comes to her stage outfits, someday people will stop giving a fuck what she wears. She's just trying way too hard to look outrageous, and it just looks dumb. People might say, "Hey, you like Queen and Freddie was sort of like that back in the old days". Sure, I agree, and I some of Freddie's on stage leotards were just painful to look at, yet it didn't overshadow the music itself.

Huh?  A musical whore, or a whore whore? To the latter, she has actually provided an excellent example for young women in publically discussing her decision to remain sexually abstinent because of the lack of  time and focus for a committed relationship.

To the OP, I appreciated your long post. :)  Lady Gaga is a not a simple or straightforward subject, so the subject benefits from some complexity in approach.  I find her fascinating on many levels for just this reason.

A few things I think are clear and indisputable:  she writes pop hooks that range from good to great,  she can really sing, she paid dues, she is capable of performances and arrangements with a great deal of musical credibility, she embodies (channels?) the last 30+ years of pop history, she is a genuine performance artist, she has a beautiful body that she uses extensively and effectively in her art, she's got a hell of a well financed operation backing her now, and finally, she has become culturally significant.

Some things are less clear.  Is her art mostly compelling and arresting and significant, or is it ultimately shallow and contrived and built only to shock?   Perhaps it's so much the latter that it actually becomes the former as a cultural statement.  Does she simply rip off the past, or is it a brilliant homage?  Does she cynically use sex to sell like a thousand others before her or  should we accept her sex as art with all the properties , freedoms and potential power that all art possesses?

Either way, she sells records and concert tickets and merchandise, which is necessarily the overriding goal of someone in any star making commercial organization.

Her latest video for 'Alejandro'  invites every one of those questions, with no clear answers.  It's a homage/ripoff of Thriller in it's length. of Madonna through the atmosphere and rhythms of 'La Isla Bonita' and the religious imagery of 'Like a Prayer' and of ABBA with clear references to 'Fernando' and a general if subtle recall of so many of their arrangements.   I think she uses sex pretty brialliantly here. Overall I like the video more on subsequent viewings than I did at first.  It was overwhelmingly Madonna-ish at first, and while I admire Madonna and appreciate her contributions I've never really been a true fan.

I have only heard the Bad Romance and Poker Face songs on the radio (more than a few times), and I've seen Lady Ga Ga perform on a few shows (American Idol and something else - can't remember which show, maybe a music awards show, and somebody interviewed her last year - was it Barbara Walters?).  My first impression of her (from American Idol last year) was that she was trying really hard to be noticed and outrageous but she didn't seem able to sing very well live and the song she was singing didn't register with me (as a tune that you would remember).  I mean, it really didn't seem to be about the music, but rather the performance.  It seemed too drama-nerd-ish (overdone and embarrassing to watch).

After hearing her "hits" on the radio, I agree that they are catchy after you hear them a few times, but I don't think they are very good songs.  To me they sound like "heard it before" dance music.  I am impressed by Katy Perry (I'll mention her because her name was brought up in the initial post).  Her voice sort of reminds me of a guitar.  That Waking up in Vegas song is really good, I think.  Catchy and good.  Is she already on the way out?  Oh, well.  Ha.

By the way, write as long of a post as you want, everybody.  Is there a limit of what the site can handle (I guess the length of the page)?  It is more interesting to read a long post, as long as it has substance, I say.  Short posts are OK too.  It's the content that matters mostly, not the length.  I like to repeat myself.

i like her videos, and her music is something fun and mindless to listen to. but honestly, im getting bored with the 'im trying to push the envelope' deal. i think she will run out of ideas eventually. or she will be ironic and subtle one day in her 'burnt out' phase, or something.

i dont think shes anything significant or amazing, she is hyped up by the media and moreso by her fans. she is talented, has a great voice and is unique to other current artists, but really, i feel she has shoved everything at us all too fast and too much. it has even shown in her health problems on her performances (falling asleep on stage, etc). that does not make you professional.

i feel if anyone has to prove a point, theyre disingenuous to an extent.

i might have more to say when im not running on 2 hours of sleep XD

I agree with Daniel. She will not ever be an icon like Madonna or MJ though. In a few years she will be forgotten and maybe she will go on to write music for other artists, but that's it I predict. She is disposable pop in my opinion.

Plus, she's the biggest draw for 2010 concertgoers.

Apparently there are plenty of people who will throw down $92 for a ticket (that's the average price on this year's tour).

I saw part of a performance on tv recently. I fully intended to absolutely hate the dreadful woman. Unfortunately, I thought she was actually quite good. She's only doing what countless other singers have done throughout the decades. That is, doing something outrageous to get noticed. Remember when we all thought Elton John was ridiculous? And Slade.

I just wish I was LGG's agent.

What a completely incoherent article:
