Interesting....

UK public broadcaster the BBC has commissioned a raft of music-related documentaries to air on BBC2 and BBC4, covering artists including Queen (pictured), Bob Dylan and Carlos Santana.

The films will air throughout May and June this year. In the three-part BBC2 series Secrets of the Pop Song, the world of songwriters will be explored.

Each episode sees songwriter, producer and musician Guy Chambers – best known for his work with Robbie Williams – collaborating with an artist to write a new song. Artists lined up to work with the songsmith include Rufus Wainwright, The Noisettes and Mark Ronson.

Elsewhere, two-part BBC2 documentary A Certain Band Called Queen looks at the legendary rock quartet 40 years after they first formed; while The Santana Story: Angels and Demons looks at the turbulent life of the Mexican-American guitarist and songwriter.

Digital terrestrial channel BBC4 will get in on the act with a series of concerts and documentaries dedicated to the easy listening genre, led by a feature-length doc commission, The Joy Of Easy Listening, which features contributions from artists including Richard Carpenter, Herb Alpert and Engelbert Humperdinck.

Finally, BBC4 also shines a spotlight on iconic singer-songwriter Bob Dylan from a somewhat different perspective, with Tangled Up With Dylan: The Ballad Of AJ Weberman.

The feature-length doc follows the life, times and crimes of the notorious Dylan obsessive and ‘Garbology’ inventor, AJ Weberman. Billed as an irreverent and witty exploration into one man’s obsessions, the film promises to be an “at times hilarious, at other times disturbing” companion piece to Martin Scorsese’s acclaimed doc No Direction Home.

Jan Younghusband, TV commissioning editor for BBC Music and Events, said: “BBC2 and BBC4 continue to take the viewer inside the world of great musicians and their music, with unique access documentaries and performance.

“With previously unseen footage of Freddie Mercury and Queen, a dedicated Dylan program and a unique new interview with Carlos Santana, as well as Guy Chambers letting us into his studio to see how great songs are made, all these films go behind the scenes into the real world of music-making.”
