"THE STORY OF BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY"

14 August 2004 BBC3

"It's nearly thirty years since Queen released the single Bohemian Rhapsody. It became the band's benchmark and went to number one twice where it stayed for a total of 14 weeks. It broke all the rules - it was nearly six minutes long and it had an opera section.

The song took an unprecedented and painstaking three weeks to record. Freddie Mercury, Brian May and RogerTaylor sang their vocal parts continually for ten to twelve hours a day, resulting in 180 separate overdubs. The video has been widely hailed as the first true pop promo, launching the MTV age and the song is still picking up awards today. In 1977 it was voted the best single of the last 25 years and in 1991 it embraced a new generation of fans when it was featured on the hit movie Wayne's World. The song continues to be performed every night across the world in the Queen musical We Will Rock You which opened in London more than two years ago and continues to sell out every day. The musical has also opened in Spain and Australia and later this year opens in the US, Russia, Germany. . .

On August 14th 2004, BBC3 will broadcast and special one-hour documentary on the story behind the country's favourite song. Narrated by Queenfan Richard E Grant, The Story of Bohemian Rhapsody features exclusive access to surviving Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor. For the first time in nearly 30 years they return to the legendary Rockfield Studios in Monmouth, South Wales where the band recorded the song and the rest of their album A Night at The Opera. They re-live their memories of the studios, provide detailed interviews about the song, it's composer the late Freddie Mercury and re-play and re-record the drum and guitar parts for the song. The Story of Bohemian Rhapsody is a journey of discovery and includes exclusive video and audio clips that have never been seen or heard before. There's previously unheard recordings of Freddie Mercury rehearsing the song at Rockfield and exclusive footage of Queen's first ever TV performance. The documentary then heads to Los Angeles where the producer of the song Roy Thomas Baker unpicks the mix of one of the most elaborate recordings in history. He strips back the layers of vocal harmonies and rebuilds the song at LA's famous Capitol Records - giving viewers a detailed account of how the song was put together. Then he plays stripped down sections of the track's opera section which have been heard before.

The documentary team tracked down the original director, cameraman and floor manager who recreate the making of the video - showing viewers exactly how they achieved the look of the video which was hailed as the first real pop promo. Then the some of the most brilliant literary minds in the country - professors of English from Oxford University- unravel the meaning behind the lyrics which Freddie Mercury never divulged. Crammed with interviews from Queen contemporaries - including Bjorn Ulvaeus (Abba) and Noddy Holder (Slade) - and the kids who became rock stars after being turned on to music by Bohemian Rhapsody - Slash (ex Guns n Roses) and Joe Elliott (Def Leppard) - The Story of Bohemian Rhapsody is the definitive account of the song which is regularly voted the 'most loved, most played and most inspirational song of all time.

Queen's former manager John Reid reveals how his other client Elton John told Queen they were mad for even considering the release of a six-minute single, And there's exclusive interviews with Freddie's mum Jer Bulsara, his sister Kashmira Cooke and Sir Bob Geldof"

- To be repeated on BBC1 next year

Fuck me if that doesn't look like it's gonna be pretty damn awesome.

Looks very much it'll be like the segment on GVHI (which was absolutely amazing for me), only more in-depth, exhaustive and generally miles better.

Don't worry, I'm getting into the habit of recording stuff direct to my computer and it always looks like a commercial dvd. I WILL NOT miss this one!!

Sounds so in-depth that I'm shocked BBC3 had the balls to do this! Hats off to the fan at the BBC, eh!?

Peace,
Adam.

I'm surprised its premiering on BBC 3 and being shown as long as next year on BBC 1. they must want to increase the popularity of BBC 3.

its times like these that I'm glad I'm a Brit.

I'm beginning to despise VHS - but only because it takes so much space at home.

Yeah, I remember that SOS article too! Good read. Ah...it's only a month away. I'll make sure and get this one for keeps!

Btw, how does a torrent work when uploading something to others? Does it require the originator (your machine) to be online all the time?

Peace,
Adam.

"I'll record it and make it dvd-r then upload using a torrent tracker."

Yes Barry Uk - that'll be ecxcellent for non-UK queen fans.

Will they still feature the re-enactments of the recording process that were mentioned a few months ago, I wonder? Apparently the bass palyer from Alfie was cast as Freddie

Wow! Sounds awesome! I've always been interested in Bo Rhap technically. I know NOTHING about music, but everything I've read says it was, technically, very difficult to record and put together. At one point you could see through the tape b/c there were so many dubs. Don't know what that means...but it sounds impressive! Anyway, has anyone heard anything about this show airing in the US? We Americans were never as into Queen as the British, from what I understand, though I'm not sure why.

Hey Barry, if I supplied you with a blank DVD-R disc, would you burn the documentary for me when it comes out?

Yes,I'm an American who wonders that as well. And I wish we had more Queen on TV here.
