The lyrics don't help much. I've heard it's about AIDS and Noah's Ark and Freddie trying to buy all the animals from Noah's Ark.

Hopefully they will never try to explain this song because that would ruin it for me.

I agree the lyrics are so ambiguous it could mean anything. I have heard from a reliable source (actually Brian May's brother Harold) that its about Brian's passion for astrology. Whether Cancer, Leo and Pisces can win a battle over Aries, Libra and Capricorn. Also the dum dum bits at the start are actually John Deacon's heartbeat recorded through a magic machine and looped.

Very complex.

Someone told me it was about a procession but that's obviously bullshit. The aids thing sounds more plausible.

I heard that it came about from Freddie hiring a chimp to take Brian's place. Apparently, The chimp wrote the song and Brian became jealous. He then slit the chimps throat and drank it's blood, Thus gaining it's guitar playing abilities and eternal youth. I'm a little shaky on the whole 'eternal youth' thing though, That MAY be someone pulling my chain, But I'm hopeful.

Here is what a cursory investigation from www.dictionary.com reveals:

The act of moving along or forward; progression.
Origination; emanation; rise.

A group of persons, vehicles, or objects moving along in an orderly, formal manner.
The movement of such a group.

An orderly succession: the procession of the seasons.

Therefore, an elementary reading (or listening) to "Procession" would reveal a short piece of origination music which introduces an orderly succession - moving along or forward the rest of the album, whose remaining tracks eminate from it.

Ofcourse, language is not always so literal - but it's a start. So if we now consider the figurative use of "procession" we find both "March" as in "March of the Black Queen" and "parade" as linked words. So "Procession" becomes like the Olympic flag-bearer who leads/introduces the rest of her team during the opening ceremony.

As for other tracks - FAQ's like "What's Bohemian Rhapsody, ...Black Queen, ...White Queen... all about - "White" becomes synonymous with "good", and "Black" with "evil". (Bo Rhap we have discussed to death).

And there we have it. Queen II is an album of deliberate contradictions and ambiguities. Good, evil, white, black, day (At the Races), night (At the Opera), life, death, "Father... Son", Love, hate (Loser In The End) relationships.

Now the good thing is that this first step becomes a solid base to commence from, and yes further levels or layers of meaning can be extracted, but as a foundation, the opening premis remains concrete.

Since you guys write into this forum, it is logical to deduce you have internet access.

So rather than flame the board with questions like "What's Bohemian Rhapsody, ...Black Queen, ...White Queen... or Procession" all about, why not take the first investigative step and visit www.dictionary.com ?

www.dictionary.com is easier to undertsand, less sarcastic, and is far more rewarding when someone discovers something for oneself :-)

Procession was written in 1973 while Brian, Freddie, Roger, and John were stuck at an intersection, already late for a show. Lo and behold, a funeral of some apparently popular person was letting out, and heading for the cemetary.

During the 20 minute wait, Brian was scribbling madly onto his shirt sleeve, different squiggles, lines, and pictures. When Freddie tried to steal the pen from him, Brian got angry and drew a moustache on Freddie's face. Roger thought it looked great, felt it made Fred look more macho, much more so than the black nail polish and flowing blouse that Fred was wearing at the time. "You should really give that look some thought, otherwise, people might get the wrong idea about you", said John.

Wow. And I always thought it was just an instrumental intro. Well, just proves how wrong you can be.

I totally agree with that, I really thought Procession was totally instrumental, and I still don't hear any lyrics at all....where do you hear the lyrics people, I don't hear anything....

Amen for John S Stuart!

Also - in terms of the concept of Queen II, its the procession of the troops going to war. Which leads us into the next track, Father To Son, one of the solidiers giving their son a message trying to explain life as he know he won't return.

There was a great site explaining the whole album, but can't seem to find it...

That's cool david, if you find it, you'll post it right?
It's great fun reading an explanation of an album, altough some people will not agree with it... I like to keep my own fantasies with songs, but I also like to know what other people think about it....

About 1.30 minutes.

Damn! That's what I was going to say!

But I've always heard it was about the band's inaugural experiments with peyote cactus. ;-)

(Too bad some people didn't grasp the obvious humor of the question... fatty isn't the only one with a sense of humor out there, ya know! But you tried!)

Why do people always think that every "mysterious" Queen song is about AIDS???

In the 70's, people didn't use to care about AIDS!
AIDS became a real known worldwide problem in the 80's!!!

I'm thinking it's just a joke...

Wheee ... more backwards records. Oh, that one Beatles one ... what was it, "Paul is dead" or something? Hm.

But the whole "ride-in-the-car" thing is great. Heeheehee.

Well, on the Queen II demos, Procession is 4 minutes long with a full set of lyrics and a vaudeville middle section.

Sounds just like "Deep Ridge" in many places.
