Having downloaded and installed XP SP2 I find I am unable to play my all time favourite PC game: Unreal Tournament.

apparently SP2 is incompatible with over 200 applications - even many Microsoft products. What a foul up!

Who here hasn't bothered to install SP2?

I got it and haven't had too many problems yet. I actually had a problem with my secondary MP3 encoder, Electronic Cosmo's MPEG Suite. I had to switch to the version for Win 2000, LOL. Then it worked fine.

And I got a message saying Nero had problems with XP in general, which it never did before, but I ignored it and it's working fine.

I would assume there will be patches for the most popular games and stuff soon enough. If not, MS is going to have many unhappy software developers and consumers.

Oh wait, they already do :-P

I did get Sp1, just to uninstall it once it for some reason capped my cable modem speed to 12kb/down... that was weird. Surely there was a logical reason, but unisntalling the sp1 crap fixed it.

I'll never mess with a stable working pc... till the next time I'm bored to tears.

I irritated our IT people at work by downloading and installing a Microsoft service pack (I forget for what) that had only been available for a few weeks ... and of course it screwed up my PC ... and I had to beg IT for help.

Moral of the story:

Never install a new service pack from Microsoft unless it has been available for some time (months?). Let some other saps have suffer Microsoft's leading edge lack of quality control.

Only my bootleg tree has worse quality control.

I wouldn't mind all the problems with SP2... but its affected my beloved Unreal tournament - the only PC game I keep returning to play!

yeah, a friend of mine (who's friend's aunt works at microsoft) gave me the SP 1 hack along with XP Pro...so I assume I'd need a SP2 hack to work with it as well
