What if Freddie was still alive? What if, in 1991, it was John who died of AIDS-related complications (ironic, i know, as he's the one that's "happily married", but stick with me on this one....)? Would there have been a tribute concert? What celebrity bassists would have stepped in for John at this show, if it even happened? Do you think there would have still been a 6 or 7 year period where all of the remaining three wanted to step away from Queen? Do you think there would still be the same arguments among fans, saying "Queen isn't Queen without John!", "John's shoes (or shorts, as the case may be) can never be filled...", etc... ?

No, of course there would not have been a huge tribute concert of it were John. The only people who knew him were Queen fans, other musicians and family. Freddie, as with most frontmen in a hugely famous band, was a household name. even if you hated Queen or even hated Freddie, you know who he was. Would the band need to take a break and step back for a while if it were John? Yes, I absolutely believe they would have.
Other people may have divided Queen by who was the most important member in some specific order but Queen never did that. They would have been just as devestated no matter who died. I've often wondered if they would have tried to go on eventually if it were another member that died instead of Freddie and I think that they probably would have because it would have been more feasable. Maybe not easy for them but very do-able. I could be wrong, but if Freddie were in the picture I think he would want to go on just like B&R are doing. My $.02

I think there still wouldve been a huge concert because The Freddie Tribute was also for Aids Awareness, not just to celebrate Freddie. I think other artists (same as at Freddie's) wouldve just joined on vocals sometimes.

If John had died, I think there's a possibility there would've been a tribute, especially to raise AIDS awareness. In the case of Freddie's tribute, most of the performers weren't his closest friends, but bands that were fans of Queen, not to mention friends of Brian. As for Queen continuing without John, I think they would've had a period of mourning, a period of uncertainty for the band's future, but in the end, they probably would've gone back to work. Each member has said that they're just 25% of the whole, but honestly, it'd probably be easier to continue without your bass player than it is if you've lost your lead singer, at least in Queen's case.

Queen wouldn't have gone on any longer if John/Brian/Roger had died. I'm trying to find a quote by Brian (or it may have been Freddie) saying that if one of them left or died that Queen would have called it quits. I can't remember where I read it though.

In your mind, perhaps?

Led Zeppelin certainly said that about their members, but I don't think Queen did.
