I have not bought a Japanase remaster; that´s why I don´t have idea if they sound better than the 1991 Hollywood Records CD´s...

Do someone recommend to buy those CD´s (jspsnese)? What is different? And, what about the Audio DVD´d (The Game-ANATO)?

Any comment?..

Thanx.

Okay, this is a drawn out one. The Japanese remasters are very good up to the Hot Space album. However, the albums after this don't seem to sound as good. Don't know why, but this has come from the listening tests done by zoners here.

As for the dvd-a material, it's great! Search the forum, because this topic has come up again and again.

Peace,
Adam.

I agree with what Adam said.. the older analog-recorded albums sound best and are in most cases a vast improvement.

I just won Queen II off Ebay, and for a pretty decent price! I hope I'll find NOTW as well.

I'm getting these two because the Hollywood versions both have major errors. II is distorted in Father To Son, and NOTW is missing the first couple chords of It's Late.

Aside from that, I've heard mp3s of the Japanese remasters, and those even sound better than the Hollywood versions. Someone here posted an mp3 of Fight From The Inside a while back, and it was amazingly good sound.

I haven't heard a sample of the Hot Space and later ones, so I'll take the word of those who say they are substandard to the earlier remasters.

If you have the Hollywood NOTW with the botched "It's Late", it's a collector's item since they released a corrected version rather quickly.

I'll try your listening tests when my broadband's back up. Unfortunately, I'm having to use a different machine and it don't sound good. But I'll gladly have a listen when I'm back on my own machine. Whenever that is...

Peace,
Adam.

These are from different sources but encoded exactly the same.

Having listened, I assume the reversed stereo on other file is/was originally there. Contestant #2 is clearly louder in waveform, but also more crushed on these small desktop speakers.

I'd say Contestant #1 is better for me.

Listened on two Creative cheapo-speakers, SB PCI 128 soundcard, using Winamp with no EQ + Adobe Audition for inspecting.

I hadn't even noticed the channels being reversed on one of them. LOL. Judging by the album version, #1 has them wrongly reversed then. Wish I could fix it and re-encode but I can't get LAME to work with my usual settings ever since temporarily switching it to 320 CBR.

Well, when you get around to it Adam, reverse the channels on #1 to properly judge them.

And thanks Pete :)

I'm just wondering how my analog transfer from DVD compares to the one ripped direct from CD :-P

Was the 'more loud' with crushed peaks the one you ripped? (I assume)

You could read some good info on re-recording audio instead of ripping at www.dtsac3.com
(poster Neil Wilkes <-search him, very informative guy)

I can't reveal which is which yet, but as far as the 'crushed peaks', this is something which is quite common I'm afraid, even many of the 2001 remasters have tracks like that, which were obviously recorded louder and then reduced.

I will say that I didn't do that when I recorded.. I recorded the entire disc of 35 tracks at the same input level after testing certain tracks and getting the highest level which didn't go into the red or 'clip. A seemingly chopped-looking wave like this can be the result of the originals being limited to a certain level which is probably what they did.. but it's nothing I did :)

Look at No-One But You on 'Greatest Hits III' and you'll see that they reduced it this way (because 'Rocks' had been so incredibly loud, no doubt so they reduced it from there to not be louder than the other tracks)
