I know a lot of you guys don't like Eminem, but that's precisely why I wanted to hear your opinions about Brian's Eminem story where he was asked by Eminem's manager about the use of 'We Will Rock You' on the song 'Puke', of the new Eminem album 'Encore'.

Funny thing is that Eminem himself used the 'We Will Rock You' beat before on a song from the 2002 album the 'Eminem Show', called 'Til I Collapse'. It actually seems far more evident on 'Til I Collapse' than on 'Puke'.

Very tue thing that Brian said was that many people have actually gotten away with "stealing" the 'We Will Rock You' beat, but I guess Brian prefers to not waste his time on lawsuits.
One of the most evident "robberies" of the 'We Will Rock' beat was from the Shania Twain song, 'Any Man Of Mine'. I remember one day my dad was watching a live Shania Twain DVD while I was upstairs and I start hearing the 'We Will Rock You' beat. I was almost convinced that she was actually going to cover the Queen song, when I start hearing an awful country song with the 'We Will Rock You' beat.

Still, I have to give Eminem credit for having the decency to ask to use the song (even though it was kinda late). I still think he's an asshole, but not as bad as I thought he was.

Yeah...both Shania and Eminem are twats, but at least he didn't steal the beat.

The producer on Any Man of Mine (and Twain's husband) is Robert "Mutt" Lange, a frequent Def Lep producer (especially all of their popular stuff from the 80s). I read an interview where he basically said that the song was good, but needed a "We Will Rock You beat" to make it better.

Now, the fact that he acknowledged that it used a WWRY-style beat and that he is a close collaborator with a band that Brian knows well leads me to think it's not stealing, really. Heck, he may have even asked permission for it 10 years ago when they recorded it.

I have no proof of this, of course, just theory. I can't imagine Mutt Lange deliberately stealing a riff like that. Personally, I think it's a deliberate homage to Queen and an anthem for country music like WWRY is for Rock. He may not have gotten explicit permission like Eminem did, but he didn't pull a Vanilla Ice, either.

You can't really steal a beat, can you?

Espceially when this WWRY you beat doesn't even sound (the noices) like in the Queen song.

Not sure, but it wouldn't surprise me. He also produced some Corrs stuff on their Breathless album. The guy's everywhere.

Yeah, I think he wrote a few songs for them, one of them being "All I Want To Do Is Make Love To You", I believe.

He also produced Back In Black by AC/DC and Heartbeat City by The Cars (the one with "You Might Think", "Drive", "Why Can't I Have You"...etc.)

I thought so! I'll have to peek in the liner notes of my copy of "The Essential Heart", But I think he may well have written "These Dreams" as well...

I just looked it up on Google, and was totally surprised to find out that Bernie Taupin (Elton's lyricist) wrote "These Dreams"....who would've guessed?!?

The funny thing is... recently I found out that you actually CAN steal a beat. I talked to a friend of mine, who is a hip-hop producer here in germany, and it is common practice amongst producers to sell and exchange beats. You can get credits for a beat on an album. They actually "compose" beats out of loops and percussion databases in musicians tools like "reason" and something like that. Pharell Williams earns a fortune selling a beat. Weird but true.

Shun-Eye-Uh has chuff all to do with country, so please don't make aspurtions that she's a country artist. She is a dreadful rock act, like Def Leppard.

If anyone's to blame for 'stealing' WWRY , blame her husband Mutt (remember the Def's Animal?) who makes everyone sound the same.

Try singing the verse to WWRY over Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar On Me".

Perfect fit.
