Because in South America they consider that there's more to see in the musical quality, performance and overall talent of an artist than their sexual orientations.

Back when I lived in Colombia nobody ever made fun of me for being a Queen fan, and most people I knew there admitted liking at least one Queen song and mentioned what a great band Queen was. Most kids of my age were more into Guns N' Roses, Metallica, or Nirvana but Queen always got a lot of respect among everybody.

I think maybe this has something to do with it :

- They were the first major rock band to conquer the continent. And the masshysteria that created resulted in huge adulation.

- Freddie's looks was much liked by the latino audience... (I have read that someplace...)

- They created very good music...

Hi, I`m argentinian by the way. I don´t know why queen is popular, but well, good for us. Here in Argentina, Queen became known in 1974, which i guess didnt happen in rest of the continent. Also, Argentina has a very long rock tradition unique in Latin America, so Queen caught up very quickly into the likes of argentinians. We were ready in some ways.

Las Palabras de Amor didn´t become a succesful song in Argentina. Is not known among argies, as it is well known "Love of my live". I guess that in 1982 it was played twice, and with luck. Because the songs in english were banned during Malvinas/Falklands war during April-June'82, and then when everything came into normal terms, the second boom(first was in the late '60s)of argentinian rock, and the fresh wound of war, made this song slide into obscurity.

Queen was the first GREAT band to come to Argentina. So everybody was amazed about them.
That gig in Velez Sarsfield was awesome. But I don't think there's a special reason to Queen's fame in South America. I'm not even sure if Queen is sooo popular here...

gracias queen!

I seriously doubt the fact that latin audiences are the best for a rock concert - at least they are not better than anyone else. I am from Austria and the audience here is always very active during concerts....

also I think South American adiences are very different from their Italian counterpart.

Well, I happened to buy the Helloween DVD "Live on 3 Continents", and there is a great difference between the Sao Paolo audience, and the Sofia / Japan audiences.

Further, the lyrics of Lavatory Love Machine by Edguy go like this

Oh if only Brazil was not so far, far away
I Would swim or walk or ride
But never ever fly
But all the noise of the maniacs there
The sweat on my face it's worth to bear
But I don't wanna bounce and die

And most of the rock/metal-bands play in front of hundreds of thousands in South America. There should be a reason, and I believe it is the audience.

In Hamburg / Munnich the audience was sitting on their places and I even was told to sit down, after I let my emotions make me stand up for the encore of the Queen concerts...

Because we have a better taste in music?

Not really. We (I'm speaking for Brazilians) are also fooled and usually have crap stuff pushed down our throats, but we know how to recognize when something (musically) is good enough if we have the chance - because probably of the whole musicality of the people and all the musical tradition we have.

As some have said, Queen here was also known here way before the 81 concerts. Anyone remember a POP magazine from 75/76 (not sure, maybe even earlier) with an interview with Cat Stevens saying that Queen was going to be the next big band in the world? I still had it until some years ago. We didn't have too many concerts here (if any) during the 70's and early 80's because of the political stuff going on, so whenever one band had the chance to break the ice and play here, they were treated as gods. With Queen, both things happened - we already liked them and they broke the ice.

What is sad is that (it's changing though) until a few years ago, we just had the chance to see bands that were about to disintegrate and that were in their lowest peaks, and it was too common to see bands splitting after a "succesful" (says who) South American tour. Also it was very common to praise these bands as "the best in the world" when they had no more success elsewhere... then they came back and back and back... some even started to live here.

Long rock tradition unique in Latin America? now come on, I will admit you got your popular bands, but not every rock en espanol came from argentina

I think it's mainly because of all the great salsa and samba grooves that we European with people misses but are very well hidden into music of Queen. That is the art of Queen, without knowing over her White Man is a great salsa track and Another ONe Bites the Dust turned out to be the big song every Carnaval in Brazil

If Jagger said that Sympathy for the Devil is a samba (many times), anything is possible.

I think you are right. Some Queen melodies resonate with Latin American music.
I think I can judge fairly cause I lived in Argentina for 5 years!!! and am familiar with Latin music. All you Argentinians HELLO!!! I lived in Buenos Aires in Alvear, then in Pena, then in Callao. I love Argentina and now when I see familiar places or actors on TV I start crying...I also lived in Peru in Lima for 4 years!!! HELLO to all Peruvians!!! In Lima I lived in San Isidoro and especially loved the ocean where sometimes you could see dolphins swimming. And people of Peru are so fantastic and very friendly! I hope to travel to wonderful Argentina and Peru some day, amigos!
Besides Queen was GLAM, and that is exactly what Latin America likes. Glamour, show, stagecraft, Freddie being such a perfect frontman.

That's pretty neat about what Cat Steven's said! =)
