I just got this on LaserDisc (finally!), and I have to say, I think this video sucks.

The camera shots weren't good, the sound editing was horrible, and please WHY the bloody audience overdubs a la WWRY Montreal?!

Tell me your thoughts...

Yes, very crap. Crap lighting, crap pictures and poor sound. Not my fave concert. The whole production is nearly as bad as Rare Live!

i saw rock in rio, and i loved it, that was the first show i seen, i loved "it's a hard life" was good stuff, but it would be interesting to see it now, after i'v seen wembly or wwry and the bowl, how it is in comparison with those shows.

The Works Tour shows all could be done much better (for example: Roger's drums' sound)

Footages sometimes are really hectic and video was much edited, that's pity.

Well, nothing can be done so much about the video since that is how it is.

However, *IF* they ever plan to re-mix it for 5.1 and put it out on DVD, here's what could be done to make it more enjoyable:

1) Throw out everything that Trip Khalaf did to make it sound horrible, including audience overdubs, and take the master multitrack tapes and make it sound like Milton Keynes or the 1995 single b-side re-mix of "Rock In Rio Blues"
2) Make it complete like Wembley, Milton Keynes, etc. - both video and audio wise
3) Throw in the other Rock In Rio concert by Queen that has never been released on video or CD as a bonus

That's what would make it way better, in my opinion

They won't release Houston because Jim Beach is way in over his head about the "sound problems" issue (allegedly)

Inu: Is there only one recording with the camera angles, edits they way they are on the laserdisc? Do you mean they didn't record all the footage shot by each camera?

Weren't a couple of tracks from Rio released as a B-side to a Five Live promo cassette? I remember hearing it somewhere and even listed it on my site. Anyone have any info about this?

Rock in Rio sucks. It seems like Brian is playing his heart out and yet the keyboards are upfront in the mix. The sound is terrible.

Those tracks are "Rock In Rio Blues" (b-side to "A Winter's Tale" CD1 Single UK and US (I think)), and "Love Of My Life" (b-side to "Five Live E.P." US cassette)

I don't know. But judging by the way the TV stations in South America seem to lose their footage so easily, whether through theft or fires (I know of a concert from Argentina where footage exists up to and including the song Fat Bottomed Girls, from 1981 I think - apparently the other half of the show was lost in a fire), I wouldn't be surprised if all independent tapes were deleted after being edited to the final master tape.

I'll have to say though, the quality is good even for a laserdisc release (though I have no idea when this particular issue - the USA issue - was released), but there are some spots where I notice things that bug me, e.g. vertical lines, grains, etc.

Speaking of the laserdisc, I transferred the whole audio portions to my PC last night, and edited the crowd endings and beginnings from side one and two, respectively, so that it flows seamlessly from after HTF ends to the beginning of BohRap.

The quality is actually much better than I thought - just only some slight humming that's noticable at the beginning of side one just before the sound really picks up.

I'm going to share it whenever I get my Internet connection back (either that, or burn it to CD and send it to someone here who can seed the whole show via BitTorrent, sometime in January)

Much better quality than Live Magic, I'll tell you that much!
