Pete Townsend.
Not the most technically gifted player, but his sheer aggression and attitude, not to mention his timing make up for it
I just love the noise he makes(or made)

Yeah Randy Rhoads was amazing too, Blizzard Of Oz, Diary of A Madman & Especially Tribute are a rock guitar masterclass.
I wonder what he would be doing now if he hadn't got on that plane, he was a legend in the making for sure.

Here's my top five:

1. Brian May
2. Slash
3. David Gilmour
4. Jimi Hendrix
5. Angus Young

But Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Joe Satriaini are also great.

Steve Rothery of Marillion is another favourite of mine(I like all sorts of music)technically brilliant, beautiful sound, tone and texture, very tasteful and able to shred with the best of 'em when he wants to
Check out Marbles for some well tasty playing.

I could name many, but of course I think highest of Brian May. But to name a few, Eddie Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Slash...

You know what pisses me off though. There was this program I saw "Top 10 Guitar Gods". Jimi made #9, Brian didn't even make the fucking list!, and you know who got #1? KIRK HAMMETT! He's great, but not #1 great, in my opinion. Fans know NOTHING! (Guitarists were voted on by music fans. Can we say RIGGED?)

2. Ace Frehley (not always great, but when he gets it right, man does he get it right)
3. Brian May
4. Eddie Van Halen
5. Jimi Hendrix

Didn't we have this not long ago? Same answer now as then. Stevie Ray Vaughn, another terrific performer taken before his time.

Jimi Hendrix
Carlos Santana
Brian May
Jimmy Page
Mick Ronson

And not in any particular order either.
Most people are like "Mick Ronson?????" But really, in actuality, he was very good. And come on people! Santana is underrated among the general public. Maybe not to musicians who know a thing or two, but the public tends to overlook his mastery. Of course my Brian would be on there, heh heh, and who can forget the two Jimi(y)s? I know I can't, lol.
Cheers

What is the criteria? Technical ability, innovation, emotion, speed, creativity? Or are you all just listing favourites?
