Google didn't prove to be a very good friend to me, I've searched for it, I swear, but I didn't get what I wanted. So I'll have to apologize if this has been asked before (if it did, just point me out the topic and let there be no more talk about it - I hate repeating topics just as much as you all). Who were Queen's bassists before John came along? I only know the name of one guy, Mitchell (... Polar Bear).

Mike Grose, Doug Bogie, Barry Mitchell and finally John Deacon.

What I'd like to know is whatever happened to Doug Bogie? The book Queen The Early Years says what the other former Queen bassists ended up doing, but not him.....but then again that book didnt even have his last name....

Re Doug Bogie: Doug (like John) was a student bassist. Unfortunately, the mythological story that he stole the limelight from the rest of the band, is just not true.

The real story is that he filled in for a few gigs (not just the one-off slot that some biographies would have us believe), and the genuine reason for his departure is that he had to sit university exams.

Remember, "rock 'n roll" was a part time life style - and Queen were no more than a pub band. Investing in his future - he decided to take his studies seriously and sit his finals.

This caused a huge rift in the band. Either he put the band first - or his "career". He chose the latter. The rest as they say is history, and he was replaced by Barry Mitchell.

No audio recordings of Queen with Doug exist, but both Doug and Brian May do own unpublished photographs of the experience.

Dougie lives and works as a film/TV producer in the Lothian area, and with hind-sight regrets his decision to leave the band, but as he explained; "One must do what one believes to be the right thing at the time - and if with hindsight it was not the right thing to do - then you have to live the rest of your life with that decision, but you can not live in the past, and you have to move forwards with your life".

John, would you mind if I use your info about Doug? You'd get the credit of course.

John hated HS. Fred's fave singer was not PR. Roger didn't compose 'Innuendo.' Witness testimonies are often inaccurate. Scotland's not in England. 'Bo Rhap' hasn't got 180 voices.

Rumour has it that he cries himself to sleep every night because he had a chance to play in one of the biggest rockbands ever

Perhaps with him they would have never evolved from club gigs. We'll never know.
