Having read a previous post which says Freddie found out he was HIV in late 1986, I have to disagree. I feel that Freddie knew he was positive either before or during the Magic Tour - either that or he had a feeling about it. My evidence for this is his extremely prophetic statement before WWTLF at Wembley and the amount of passion he puts into its performance. Also, the fact that he shuns the afterparty after Knebworth and is extremely quiet seems to suggest that he is preoccupied with something (final tour, hiv etc.,)

Thoughts?

Possibly, as an argument broke out in Spain I think backstage and Freddie snapped back "Well I'm not gonna be doing this forever!" Can't remember where I read that now...

He knew he was HIV positive before the tour. Because of this, he didn't want to perform live anymore. But good 'ol Crystal got him drunk and they played a game of Scrabble. After a while, he agreed to do it :-) THANK YOU CRYSTAL!

In a concert in Leiden Freddie says something like he is tired half way through the set and seems really angry about that. He must have felt that something was wrong, even if he didn't know then.
And all the gay friends falling ill at that time...

I've read in Lesley-Ann Jones' biography "Freddie Mercury The Definitive Biography" that he once got all upset in '85 when he cut himself or something, and thus was bleeding. He supposed to have cried out to Barbara Valentin to keep away from him, coz he was dangerous or something.

Me being not up to speed with the legitimacy of this biography, it might be just a load of bullocks ofcourse.

you didn't. Brian said that on the interview for the new wembley DVD. Although he never actually said the words "Aids", he always said "it" so I wonder about it but I'm sure he must have been speaking of Freddie's illness.

My response was not a theory. Crystal talked about it in the stories he used to post on the QFC site. I wish I could put a link up here for you. :-(

I always thought Freddie was just going through the motions at Wembley. Compare with Live at the Bowl.

"Also, the fact that he shuns the afterparty after Knebworth"

You mean the Roof Gardens afterparty with Samantha Fox and Gary Glitter? Some reliable sources say it was after the second Wembley concert, other sources say it was after Knebworth. Does anybody know for sure?

Yeah... I read in the book 'Queen - The Definitive Biography' that it was the Knebworth party and Lady Cobbold (the owner of Knebworth) has a quote to back it up.

according to many sources, he had an AIDS test in 1985 which came back negative...but with the lifestyle he had led...im sure he knew it was only a matter of time. he must have begun to feel physically different, and had renewed fears, that led to his 1987 test

Someone seems to think that they can see Kaposi Sarcoma on Freddie during the '84 Montreaux festival. I watched it myself - there are markings, but god knows if they're that or not. And that his bloated appearance in 1986 was water retention from some medication. Again - no idea if that's true.

And him falling ill in 1984 makes sense, 7 years is a reasonable life expectancy for an HIV guy. Watch his interviews, read his quotes - maybe I'm reading into it too much but it seems that he knew something was up even if his doctor didn't at the time.

I've got a documentary "Queen - Is This the Real Life?" And Brian and Roger are talking about after Knebworth finished. Along these lines...

BRIAN: And Freddie said 'I don't wanna do this anymore'. We all thought it was a bit wierd, because he was usually up for anything. And we just thought maybe he's going through a phase, or maybe there's something wrong. I remember having that thought in my head. But we just went along with it, for a long time, years afterwards.

ROGER: And then one day, quite a long while later, he invited us round, he said 'come around, I've got something to tell you' and then he told us. Completely devastated.

BRIAN: He said "You probably know what I'm dealing with. I don't want to talk about it again. Ever. I just want to go on, making music till I fucking well drop.

<cue shot of I Want It All>

Good documentary that. Anyway, my impression is that he got it in 1984, had an inkling for a while (coupled with natural paranoia) and found out in '86 - hence his reasons for not wanting to tour no more.

I agree with Zebonka12. Although i haven't seen this documentry, it sounds pretty legit. And it would explain that statement before WWTLF. I always found that a bit odd.

Hey there,
I'd think it was legit. Unless they dubbed over Brian May. :)

A few years ago, I bought a book entitled: The Freddie Mercury Story, Living On The Edge written by author David Bret. In his book his states that Mercury found out the he found that he had AIDS in 1987. On page 145, Bret states "It is now known that Freddie had held back during his in-depth interview with David Wigg over his HIV test- the fact that only days before speaking to the journalist the results of this and a subsequent test had confirmed the worst. Not only was Freddie most definitely HIV positive, he quite likely had already developed full-blown AIDS."
