Seems like old crap is being considered better than new crap.

It's sick that after more than 50 years we still call Elvis 'The King Of Rock N' Roll', when he has just about as much talent as Justin Timberlake... both couldn't write songs, couldn't play instruments, but got too overhyped thanks to their good looks.

you have to be kidding...he's THE KING because he was the greatest performer of rnr music ever
look at everyone since - many imitate - but few are good enough to get close

and as for the writing his own songs bollox
- there's plenty of songwriters that never performed their own music - the ability to perform is just as vital as the ability to write
the best collaborations are where a great writer and a great performer work together

He was the first even if he ain't good at your standards, but he did much more for music than Justin and a lot of other guys.

Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Buddy Holly, Billy Haley, The Platters, Fats Domino (just to mention a few)... Those DID SOMETHING!

On Elvis' case it was more what music did for him, than what he did for music.

I have to give the guy the props for being a good performer, but in the long run he's just a fabricated star.

Yes, but do you think people remember those guys? They probably remember songs or just melodies. But everyone knows who is Elvis. That is show-biz!

Yes, he's not the best ever. But you know I really don't care who's on top of any charts, I love Bo Rhap not because it reached #1 in the charts.

So forget about them and leave 'em with their Elvis! :)

Until this evening, Queen's Bo Rhap was the only song to be released by the same artist to reach number one in the UK. Now that Elvis has reached number one with Jailhouse Rock, that is no longer so. Also, Elvis is now the only artist (I believe) to have the the same number one in two different centuries and millenia.

Get used to it as this is the start of a "new" campain by his record company to re-release every one of his 18 or 19 number ones on a week to week basis. And all because if he was still alive, he would have been 70 years old this week.

Totally agree with you on that one.

That's precisely the same reason why Ashlee Simpson got a record contract.

I kind of half agree with that. I much preferred the pre-army Elvis performances as apposed to the "cat-suit Vegas" years as he was more raw and driven then.

HeM wrote:

Elvis' videos are very crappy, they don't look like rock videos at all. They look much more Ula-Ula videos than rock videos, if you want my opinion.

Thats probably because many of his vids came from actual films and had to fit into the formula of the film which itself was usually crap.

Incidentally, Elvis isnt the only oldie in the charts - at #3 is Iron Maiden with Number Of The Beast!!

Here's a sad tale that's oddly appropriate:

My English teacher is a, let's say, CYNICAL person. She likes to tell our class that the youth these days just EATS UP commercialized pop and pulp fiction; She infered that if you liked the movie ,"A Walk to Remember" you were naive and uncreative. Yet when she asked us to make a connection between a novel we were reading and pop culture, I rose my hand and compared a barrier in the novel to Pink Floyd's The Wall (long story) she clicked her tounge and said, "you WOULD like Pink Floyd". As if that was a bad thing! And then, one day I wore my Queen hoodie to school and she rolled her eyes at me.
So this psuedo-think ouside the box/ don't buy into what the music industry throws out at you- lady... you'll never guess who her favorite "artist" is... Elvis. Because, NATURALLY, Elvis' music is thought provoking and not overdone or commercialized AT ALL...

Invented the fifties? I didn't realise he did that! Must have taken some doing. Did he take out a patent?

I like Elvis. I try to do his shuffle at parties, but I just end up getting attacked.

Next week is the 1000th number one ever (if it's a new entry), I'd rather it be Elvis than some shitty girl/boy band crap

Saying that the only single I shall be buying this week is Somebody Told Me by The Killers, and thats only for a b-side.

I remember when "A Little less conversation" was at the top it had to be taken off or something because it was number one for god knows how many weeks, if it remained on the chart noone else was going to get a look in!

Still things like this publicly prove that todays music is pants

So he didn't write his own songs BIG DEAL, wot about Elton?? Elvis was the first entertainer! Saw the movie "Elvis Lives" yesterday for the 3rd time. He was truly great. The amount of CRAP he got for moving his hips and racist fucks who said rock n roll was "nigger music" and he should be banned. Respect for the guy and i love his music.
