When asked about it Freddie said he couldn't have known who gave him AIDS because whoever did was always behind him.

(My apoligies to anyone who found that offensive... someone once told me that joke)

That's not cool or even remotely funny. Refrain from similar comments in the future for the basic ideal of respect or at least common decency.

If Freddie had died from a flu - would anyone here ask who "gave" him the virus?

Ditto:

Homophobic people see AIDS as a punishment for being gay. I don't really care about a person's sexuality.... that's their business but to suggest that somebody give someone AIDS deliberately is totally irresponsible, callous, insensitive and ******* stupid. It is very likely that Freddie was already infected before he met and lived with Jim Hutton anyway so watch your wise cracks as some people might find such remarks very offensive....particularly gay people.

Actually, people do die from influenza. Particularly those with preexisting heart or lung disease, or people who are otherwise at high risk. There are supportive treatments for it, but no "take this pill and the virus dies" type of thing.

But on to the topic, I've heard that someone told Freddie that two of his former boyfriends had died from AIDS and that he should be tested. Freddie's first HIV test was negative, but he was still having his doubts, so he was tested again at a later date. I've only read this from one source though - accuracy of it is a completely different subject.

it's not about homophobia - it's about ignorance - you don't have have to be homophobic to be wrong - just lacking all the facts

one point to pick on....who's to say that (by default) people like Freddie weren't passing on HIV irresponsibly?

Rock Hudson had already been "outed" as HIV yet - the "promiscuous" amongst the gay fraternity carried on being "promiscuous" surely that is taking unnecessary risks?

there are three main groups that are more vulnerable to the risks of HIV
1. intravenous drug users who share gear
2. practicing homosexual/bisexual men
3. hetrosexuals who have many partners

now anybody in those groups who didn't start taking EVERY precaution possible after the Hudson thing leaked - was clearly being irresponsible - and Freddie - much as i admire and respect him for the wonderful music he made must fall into the over-irresponsible category

Wasn't it too late. By the time the AIDS virus was publisised Freddie had already been infected.

i duuno...from this timeline i think it's safe to assume Freddie (along with countless others) had plenty of time to "clean up their act"

early 1980 So-called Patient Zero, Air Canada flight attendant Gaetan Dugas, diagnosed with AIDS. His reputation is such that he infected dozens and likely hundreds of gay men in anonymous bathhouse sex (estimate 250 partners per year), fostering rapid propagation of the virus among the gay community. However, there is great dispute as to the amount of responsibility which must be assigned to Dugas. In reality the "Patient Zero" moniker should apply only in reference to the studies of Dr. Alvin Friedman-Kien, the doctor who linked Kaposi's Sarcoma with homosexuality, in which Dugas played a key role.
1980 31 deaths from HIV infection in the United States.
1982 Jerry Falwell: "AIDS is God's judgment of a society that does not live by His rules."
30 Mar 1984 Gaetan Dugas ("Patient Zero") dies of AIDS.
1985 Poll shows that 51% of Americans favor quarantine of those with AIDS.
25 Jul 1985 A gaunt Rock Hudson announces he has AIDS.
2 Oct 1985 Actor Rock Hudson dies of AIDS.
1986 "Everyone detected with AIDS should be tattooed in the upper forearm, to protect common needle users, and on the buttocks to protect the victimization of other homosexuals." William F. Buckley, New York Times.
4 Feb 1987 Pianist Liberace dies of AIDS.
May 1987 According to his authorized biography (published in 2000), President Ronald Reagan wonders aloud about the AIDS pandemic: "Maybe the Lord brought down this plague... [because] illicit sex is against the Ten Commandments." [Dutch, p. 458]
13 Mar 1988 Well-endowed pornstar John Holmes dies of AIDS.
20 Jun 1990 On his television show The 700 Club, Pat Robertson declares: "Many observers say that AIDS is the hammer and gun of the homosexual movement, an effective vehicle to propel the homosexual agenda throughout every phase of our society."
Nov 1991 Magic Johnson announces he is HIV positive.
24 Nov 1991 Freddie Mercury dies of AIDS, London.

No, it was Nicholai, the most promiscuous of the "fab four" Freddie, Kenny, nicholai and Pepe.. Nicholai brought it from NYC Gay clubs to London and infected first Kenny, then kenny infected Pepe and Pepe or Nicholai infected directly Freddie. So says the widow of Kenny.

This happened aropund 84, only little earlier than Freddie had the encounters with Tony Bastin.

Winnie Kirchenberg also contracted it from Freddie and died late eighties.

Id also like to hear your thoughts about when the knowledge of Hiv- infection dramatically changed his always happy and cheerful spirit (public image) to spiritually degraded more quieter and less smiling himself we can see happened quite soon after the Magic tour.. in that interview from '87 when he talks of his thoughts to retire touring and how the performing is "like acting" and about the collaboration with montserrat beside the jukebox in white suit.. his spirit has already had this major tensification.. and his facial figures changed by weight loose/lipohydstromy. The awareness of his infection and gloomy destiny, must have stricken hard on him, or he had the first painful symptoms of advancing illness..
