My brother reckons that "The Cross" broke up because Val and Clayton's marriage failed. Is this true or is he a liar?

I can't see the straight connection. Brian's and Roger's marriages failed as well, but Queen broke up cause of another reasons.

I think your brother may have a point. Or maybe they all thought they were moving on to better things...

The Cross broke up because EMI were not prepared to inves in the band in the run-up to Queen preparing to start work again for The Miracle.

At the point, The Cross had released the Blue Rock album and the reaction of the tour in support to Magnum had been excellent. The story was that promotors in Europe (namely Germany, Holland and France) wanted a full-scale Cross tour 0- mainly because of the lack of Queen activity and the fact that NONE of the members of the band had toured to support any solo material and Roger had been more prolific than the others up to that point. This would have committed Roger outside of the Queen monster and would therefore have put him into immediate conflict as to his responsibilities - ie:

1 - record a studio album with a band that has no intention of going on tour

or

2 - tour with a band that had just completed a killer album and was beginning to forge it's own path as a new venture.

EMI saw this and pulled out of all promotion activities and withdrew the financial support for touring, just incase The Cross took off and established a niche for themselves at the expense of Queen. Hence, the only other Cross shows that have been played since the end of the Blue Rock tour have been in the UK and have been one-off events.

Personally, I think this was all very sad.

I don't understand your explanation, Benn.
The Miracle was released in 1989, Blue Rock in 1991, so there was no conflict.

The Blue Rock tour in Germnay ended in October 1991, that was long after the release of Innuendo and shortly before the death of Freddie Mercury. Again, there was not conflict between Queen and The Cross commitments for Roger Taylor. I don't think he ever made a public statement why he disbanded The Cross but maybe it was the lack of success.

Definitely this was the reason... Blue Rock had been only released in Germany + the lack of success + Freddie´s death caused The Cross not to be a priority anymore for Roger. Then he only joined them @ the Gosport 93 farewell show (called "Final Destination"). There´s where Roger´s "funk" version of WWRY was originally born.

I love Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Okay, carry on gossiping about The Cross. :)
