A couple of logistical questions for you, John:

Should live covers, where bootlegs are the only source, be included along with studio covers? Some of those covers, such as U2's WWRY, are just brief snippets of Queen music and can only be found on obscure bootlegs. Should an asterix be added to live stuff just for resource purposes?

Also, do you include the various WWRY Cast albums or tracks as covers? That would include the original cast album, the Spanish version, and Annie Crummer's AOBTD. Perhaps Hannah Jane Fox's Parkinson version of Somebody to Love as well.

I like your work so much, John, that I want to give you more :)

One more thing, what about the various Queen+ appearances over the years. Does Will Young's WATC count as a cover or is he just a rented singer?

Zeni: Good questions.

Basically, I am just "Thinking aloud" and playing with ideas. I know that I have more to add to the above list and that it is in need of some (hopefully minor) surgery.

I hope to include all the "We Will Rock You" cover and studio variations, and I agree, perhaps an asterix against live versions may be beneficial.

Will Young - cover or collaboration - or perhaps both? You help me decide.

I know that much of this stuff is internet available (that's why I have chosen some of QZ's very own champions), so the live versions may not be as obscure as you think.

Zeni: "I like your work so much, John, that I want to give you more :)"

It's the best offer I've had this side of Xmas! Any lap dancing pictures received gratefully! (Hey, they don't call me John for nothing ;-)

I know that this sort of project, when completed, needs to be updated almost daily - otherwise it becomes a real bugger to keep up to date.

Any chance that a "page" could be set aside at Queenzone for this - and as soon as we know of anything "new" - it could be added to the list instantly?

Or, are people just not interested in this sort of thing?

The problem with cover versions is that people are either attracted to covers of particular songs, or if one of their other favorite bands covers a Queen song. That list has a whole lot of bands I've never heard of and never will again. However, I heartily agree that a QZ page dedicated to cover versions, which we can update it as necessary, would be a great resource. We have a concert resource (Scully), a video resource (Darren), a trainspotting guide (Adam now), and a collectible guide (Ron). All we really need is a covers guide and, at least for me, a guide to various interviews.

"Will Young - cover or collaboration - or perhaps both? You help me decide."

Collaboration. If I had thought before I typed, I would have realized that belongs in a different category. Having said that, most of the Tribute concert covers listed should probably also be considered as collaborations.

"and I agree, perhaps an asterix against live versions may be beneficial."

Yeah, especially when they are just snippets of Queen songs. To use the U2 example again, this is less a cover of WWRY and more of Bono just vamping for the audience. Speaking for myself, I'd rather there be a distinction between what is actualy a full version of a Queen song, and what is Axel Rose singing one line of a Queen song before GnR launches into their own song.

"Any lap dancing pictures received gratefully!"

I'm sorry, but those cost more than my ducks.

There is a page like that. I believe it is called (or something similar) to 'There Can Only Be One' and it looked pretty recent to me.

You included covers by Adam Baboolal and Adam Steen from the Queenzone stage of Champions but not Vinou, Bob Wegner and other fans.
And what about live performances for example by Valensia (last year in Vlaardingen on the Dutch convention,) JS Scoto, the Sas Band ... should they be included even if it was just a small audience?

YV: As I said above,

"I am just "Thinking aloud" and playing with ideas. I know that I have more to add to the above list and that it is in need of some... surgery."

That's why I have posted this - so I could "redraft" on-line. This sort of writing becomes very tedious after a while, and mistakes are therefore very easy to make. By opening it to the wider community, I was hoping for such over-sights to be brought forward, and that between us all, we could come up with a "Cover Version: Ultimate Collection".

PS: My quip: "OK. I will repair it with an edi!" - was intentional - and meant as a bit of fun!

"Listen to them. Children of the night. What music they make."
