If you want a really good sound mixer I'd suggest Adobe Audition. It's expensive but the best tool for audio availible.Of course you can also try the less expensive Goldwave whitch is pretty good as well.

the best bit of free software i came across for audio editing is audacity!

Eh? It's alright, but for mixing on, I'd suggest something like Cubase. Audition's good for getting things moving, but for mixing control, I moved to Cubase.
