I think it's a fine and prestigous honor. I mean every artist says they don't care about awards...until they actually GET one. Mick Jagger just said that in 2 interviews here on "60 Minutes" and "Charley Rose Interviews" last year when he was knighted. Jagger said he never thought he ever cared about awards and honors especially from Queen Elizabeth. But when she announced his Knighthood, he said he was literally so very humbled, and you could see and hear by the tone in his voice that he REALLY did MEAN it. He was so humbled and honored and said so! Most artists consider it more a validation from their country, their fans.
I think it's nice. After a lifetime of achievment. It's not like a poll that's based on politics or popularity. It's based more on what LIFETIME contributions an artist has selflessly given to ENHANCE the culture, history, of a nation and its people. So Yeah, I think it would be most wonderful to honor Freddie and Queen!!!!
And Queen, of all British music artists are so adoring and affectionate to their English countryman, and British culture. And Freddie loved to wear the Union Jack in concert. And Brian played at the Queen's Jubilee. Queen always close their shows with Britain's national Anthem, "God Save The Queen". Queen loves all of their fans worldwide..but they SO adore and are SO adored BY their home of England. Queen has done so much to enrich the lives, culture, music, and history of England and it's people...they are so deserving.
Here in the USA we do the same. The President gives the Congressional Medal of Honor, as well as The Kennedy Center Honors Awards, to artists who have made substantial contributions to American culture, be it music, film, theater, dance, literature.
George M. Cohan one of our GREAT songwriters and writers/producers of Musical Stage Theater got The Congressional Medal of Honor I think right after World War -geez that's terrible I forget was it which World War..1 or 2...my history lessons need refreshing...for instilling pride and morale to our troops in battle...and our entire country, for writing both "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and "You're A Grand Old Flag".
Now each President elect every year gives about 5 awards out as part of The Kennedy Center Honors Awards. I think recent recipiants have been the late great Ray Charles, Film Director Steven Spielberg, Blues music legend B.B. King, Beverly Sills (opera), Marion Anderson (opera) etc.
I would feel PROUD to have Both Freddie and all of the members of Queen receive a knighthood or MBE from Queen Elizabeth...and you can bet your buttons...knowing Brian especially, who is particularly sentimental about these things..
...(remember how much it meant to Brian to play "God Save The Queen" at Queen Elizabeth's Jubilee on the Top of Buckingham Palace).....
....that Brian, Roger, John, and Freddie's family, would to!
