The speed of new announcements is staggering. I am sure that I am not the only one who is having problems keeping up with the sheer volume of material (especially Queen + Paul Rodgers) currently being "released".

Yet, because of the "fear" of torrents drying-up, downloading these "releases" has become a bit of a gamble - suiting only those "quick-off the mark" or with really superfast internet connections.

killerkral: "Help!! Im stuck at 97%. Could someone please reseed?"

Elessar: "Can anyone see 2 seeders now?"

We-Are-The-Champions: "Where are the seeders when you need them..eh? Like women and cops..never around when you really want them!!"

Penetration_Guru: "I reckon there are about 30 of you currently all together at about 90% - let's see how many stick around after 100%"

So in an attempt to make things BETTER and more relaxing for ALL, and to GUARANTEE that even those with the slowest or poorest connections benefit from this generosity, how about some Permanant Master Seeders?

That is, in repayment for all my downloads, I promise to permanently house "concert X" on my hard-drive. That way, it will ALWAYS be available.

Now the way I see it, if c100 Quenzoners agreed to these terms - then those seeds would NEVER die.
So even if it took 3 weeks to down-load, at least it would be guaranteed. This does not mean that your PC need be switched on 24 hrs of everyday, but, when connected, at least the download exists somewhere in it's entirity.

I also think it would be foolish (due to copyright reasons) to publically announce who housed what, but, if Richard was to send all a secret e-mail stating "Your resonsibilty is to house X" - at least, in theory, each seed would be handled by a "master seeder".

It's only an idea that needs to be discussed, and for my part, I am willing to do my share, but I think it would help get rid of many leechers because simply, if you do not want to share, then you should not be able to download.

What do you guys think?

I think it's a pity it even needs to come to such an idea, but I think you are on to something John. In the face of reality it is a good idea. I'm in the same boat myself, with 3 torrents making very slow progress due to monthly download limitations, and I'm wondering if any of them will make it to 100%.

I'd be willing for one. There are a few technical issues that would need to be overcome though. Recently I tried to re-seed the 1980 Wembley gig for many that were stuck, but I have a hell of a job trying to get it to work. Of course part of the reason was my anything but adequate knowledge of bit-torrents and their clients, but the program (Azureus) also seemed to make it difficult. In that particuklar case Azureus refused to accept my files as being 100% and proceeded to download again and again, the last .5% of the download. I was on as a peer, but never got into seed mode because I eventually pulled the plug after downloading 100MB for nothing. There was nothing wrong with my original copy in the first place.

As another example, if someone downloads a torrent which is a folder, what happens when they want to re-seed it, if they have moved the folder, and possibly even renamed the files to suit their filing system. Can a download such as this for example be re-seeded, or does it have to be *exactly* as it was downloaded? They're the sort of issues I think would need to be sorted out.

But it's a good initiative for sure.

John, this is a brilliant idea.

Having frustratingly missed out on the end of a few torrents now, I can see this as a way to make everyone feel more secure.

Certainly it would need some organization to make it viable, but I would be very willing to participate.

Volunteer 'permanent seeders' could agree to keep something alive for a minimum period of say, three months and then give a reasonable period of notice if they needed to close it down. At which time someone else may be able to step in and take over the seeding?

That way if someone left the board or was away, the torrent would still be accessible.

I look forward to reading others thoughts on this.

Well it seems that this idea wasn't over subscribed.

A shame really - as dozens of guys are still waiting on 99.9% - ANNOUNCE: Queen - Life is Real - New Jersey 1982 - LOSSLESS - FLAC - and as far as they know, no complete seeds exist.

I think some kind of ratio index (like on EzTorrent) could be also the way (or one step to make this better). There was the debate about it already here.

well, I think something like "sharing ratio" would be the best way to solve this problem, but I really do not know if it is technically possible.

Yes it is, and it should replace the old post counts - let's see EVERYBODY'S share ratios - leechers would soon be obvious.

Well, I enjoy your idea a lot. This'd be the right "counter" for some people :-)) Lets do it, Richard (yes, I know, it's easy to say but hard to do).

EDIT: And I wanna add, I'm not again permanent master seeders and I can help here too. The problem I can see here is, that there'll be a few "volunteers" who seeds and more and more leechers, who won't upload anything ('cos they'll be sure, there is always somebody, who helps). Maybe it's a pesimistic vision, but... you all know, reality is usually sad.

Well, I think this is a great idea and I'd love to volunteer. There's one slight problem however and I'd love to get a reply about it. I can't keep my computer open for 24 hrs a day. I can only keep it for 10 - 12 hrs, after I return from school. Besides that, Sunday & Saturday I'm not at home and sometimes my connection is failing (for some hours or even days). Is that okay for me to volunteer for this project? I really want to help, please let me know. I can seed anything Richard indicates me to (e.g. now I'm seeding the Earl's Court video and was surprised to see there are still some peers, after such a long time since the torrent has been uploaded).
