So many say they can't use it. I don't get it. Why can't you use it? Is it because you are using your work computer and you are behind a firewall? Is it because you are too computer ignorant to install a simple program? Or is it because you live in Outer Mongolia and can only get dial-up?

I'd really like to hear why people can't use bit torrent. Maybe we can help you.

You don't have to live in Mongolia, you can live in Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria etc - where monthly earnings somewhere are about just $100 and people can't pay for something more good than dial-up. Maybe it sounds strange for you guys, but it's true. I have ADSL connection, but most of other Russian guys are not so lucky. Listen to Roger's "Revelation" for more details...

Because some people pay for outcoming and incoming Mbs, because some people pay for spending time, because they can't download one show for 4 days, etc. etc. etc. - don't try to equal all countries and cases by yours!

I have nothing against torrents, but I can't download shows in FLAC because my hard drive is smaller than the Sun - but I anyway I take it easy. So I hope you'd take it easy as well.

To use bitttorrent you really need broadband otherwise it takes ages to download stuff.

I'm in the UK where broadband is available in most places but not all - I have friends in a couple of places where BT have not improved the telephone system to allow broadband access as yet.

Some people use internet providers that limit the amount of downloads - whether this is because they have no choice or because they have gone for a cheaper option I don't know. I use AOL which has unlimited downloads.

Bittorrents rely on other users seeding the thread - without other users sharing the info there is no data to obtain. I find this a problem on Queenzone as often there are very few people seeding the torrent. I use dimeadozen.org a lot which has a lot more users and is usually a lot faster - however this is limited as they only allow 100,000 registered users at any one time so if you are not registered you can't use it.

While bittorrents allow any type of files, lossoess takes longer to download than MP3's so some don't like that, depending on access to the computer and disk space.

Rapidshare and the like are useful for smaller downloads which suit MP3s but not lossless.

I prefer downloading the lossless formats where possible and then copy them to cd for normal use and in to MP3 format to use on my iPod when travelling. However, if something is only available in MP3 then I'll download that, it is better than not having the music at all.

Those who only want lossless or only want MP3 are limiting themselves as are those who only want torrents or only want rapid share.

Make use of the best that is available to you - sometimes there will be files that you can't download due to system, hardware or access limitations, but don't expect everyone to always thread items at the lowest common denominator and be restricted by the same restrictions as you may have.

I hate torrents.

I use my dads computer, he has to work on it and ABC, and other programs I've installed slow down the computer and when I'm not on it he needs to use it..

That's my reason. Plus, it hasn't once connected to peers for me..

I don't know anything about ABC client, but I use BitTornado and I'm able to play even games on comp with BT started. So maybe try another client, because there's no reason, why it should slowing computer (if it's not really slow itself).

It's necessary to set client, if it's not connected to peers. Probably some problem with personal firewall or router. But it's usually solvable.

I had my new pc delivered yesterday and within an hour I had downloaded bit-torrent and after a little tinkering around with my firewall software was downloading Houston 77 which an hour later I had copied onto 2 cd's and was listening to on my unfeasibly large hi fi.I'd never used bit-torrent before but I had no problems at all so I for one am quite happy to use it.

So There!

I use sometimes, but I really don't like it. Here are some reasons:

1st: I hate it when there are no seeders for some gig I really want to download.
2nd: I can't leave my pc connected for many days and nights, there are other users at home.
3rd: I have a download/upload limit, so I can't use bittorrent a lot, or at least the upload limit will be reached and I'll have to pay for the extra MBs.

1st: You can always ask for seeders on the forum. That's what I did more than one time. And I always managed to complete my d/loads and to seed for others.

2nd: You don't have to. With an average d/load speeed of 16-18 kbps, keeping your pc open for like 6 ghours a day, I remember d/loading Hyde Prk, my first torrent, in four days. I have this bad connection (however, no upload limit) and I first couldn't get the bittorrent to work (mostly, cos I was scared to give it a proper try), but now I take my time and everything's fine. I LOVE bittorrent, if I didn't have it, I wouldn't be able to d/load larger video files.

bittorrent is an impossible nightmare for people with broadband caps. To download and upload at the same time will let you reach your monthly limit within the hour.

I have never attempted to use bit-torrent, for the simple reason that in order to download you are relying on others to seed....which could mean I'd be stuck at a certain percentage for yonks !!

I personally prefer Rapidshare and also another way of obtaining concerts which is seemingly no longer fashionable - trading!

*twitches awkwardly* Bitorrent is a pain in the a-s-s like other people here i have NEVER been able to connect to peers, however Bitcomet downloads straight away with no probs. so there you have it.

I have used torrents sometimes, but it's quite pain in the ass with my connection.
I'm connected (8mbit) trough my university network. At the uni they are quite pissed off with too large p2p traffic so they have decided that anyone who uses a p2p software are moved to slower band. That means that when I start downloading a 700 mb torrent my download speed is only 1-1,5 kbits/s. So that's not so funny.

I myself have a broadband cap, which is why I DO like torrents. If I download stuff between 2am and 9am it doesn't count towards my limit, so I just set the torrents up and let them start while I sleep. I have a 12GB a month limit, and I reach it every time. :)

There are some good answers here. Lots of reasons why bit-torrents don't suit everyone. Fair enough as well. I like all sharing methods - the hub, bit-torrent, rapidshare, youshareit, and even good old trading.
