Let's hope Queen+Paul Rogers meet the criteria and are A list enough to be booked for Live 8, if they can and want to do the satellite link.

But read this press release about Geldof axing The Spice Girls, who for weeks now have been imploring him to perform at Live 8, and WHY he axed them.

GELDOF AXES SPICE GIRLS FROM LIVE 8

Campaigning rocker SIR BOB GELDOF has axed the SPICE GIRLS from this summer's (05) star-studded LIVE 8 charity concert - because he fears they aren't popular enough.

The WANNABE stars - GERI HALLIWELL, VICTORIA BECKHAM, MELANIE CHISHOLM, MELANIE BROWN and EMMA BUNTON - hoped to reform the band for the gig and perform together for the first time since 1998, when Halliwell quit the group.

But Geldof has ended weeks of speculation about whether the pop fivesome are being reconsidered for the historic event, by confirming they have been dropped from the line-up, because they have lost their huge fanbase.

He explains, "I can't afford to have bands who won't pull the crowds. This is a political event, not a cultural one.

"If I get people who are currently selling 15 million albums, then there's an audience of at least 15 million people for the concert. It's a question of who is popular right now; that's the way it is.

"The whole thing with the Spice Girls isn't about my personal taste - my kids sing their stuff. But there just aren't enough people out there who would want to watch them."

i´m in Portugal, but this sounds ridiculous!
I might be wrong, but i think they still have lots of fans, and believe me I`M NOT ONE OF THEM, but i don´t understand where Bob Gueldof has based hid opinion to say this.

By the way, who are the artists on the London line up that sell 15 millions albums.
And if this is a criteria, where the fuck are Van Halen, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Scorpions, and others well known artists, that just don´t sing crappy pop tunes?

Take care

Queen plus Paul Rodgers just finished a sold-out European tour, mind that! And Sir Bob is a good friend of Roger's (Taylor).

yea bob geldof and roger are like best mates roger let geldof live in one of his houses for a long time in london while geldof found somewhere to live after his split with paula, but imo its a wise choice dumping the spice girls everyone knows why they would be there only for themselves, i see geri got booed off stage after singing only two songs at some gig!!! i think queen are still hugely popular as someone said after there sell-out tour!!

I did not know Roger & Sir Bob are friends and that Roger let Bob bunk at his home, after Paula left Bob. Very, very thoughtful and nice of Roger.

I actually did not want the Spice Girls for another reason. I had read some earlier press that said that Sir Bob and the Live 8 organizers thought that The Spice Girls' music and the band itself, even if they were "A" list in terms of sales, were considered WAY too fluffy, pop, for children fans almost...and their image was not serious enough as REAL musicians, (which they aren't they are a manufactured girl band, don't write their music, don't play instruments, and were "put together" by an audition by a Brit Manager for a girl band),

... and would therefore undermine the significance of the political/social awareness message of Live 8.

I think Sir Bob today said the bit about their album sales not being enough, so as not to hurt the members of the band by saying well "they are crap, not real musicians", but from what I have heard for weeks...this is the REAL reason they got 86ed.

I think Geldof is hoping the line up of some ageing rock stars will keep people entertained. You can bet Mccartney does his usual feeble 15 minutes (13 of those minutes repeating over and over again the versus of "Let it be" ie Live Aid)

Actually thats not quite what he said on GMTV on Monday morning. He gave the impression that if a time slot could be found they may perform. I "think" he also said that that was largely down to Harvey Goldsmith to sort that out. He (Bob) went on about the Spice Girls having issues within the band to sort out as well before they could consider their taking part in Live 8.

I personally am not bothered whether they *perform* or not, as the event is not about them just the same as the original Live Aid was not about Queen either.

Q+PR have just been on pretty much a sell out tour and are going to play Hyde Park themsleves 8 days after Live 8, I think they have a big enough audience. Plus if Geldof is only wanting acts that are popular now then why is he going go Play?

Question: Why is it called Live 8 now? Is it something popular to attract young viewers? It's really annoying

If you would read my blog, which tells you most everything you need to know...see my address below my signature, and read the news/press as well...

Live 8 is a combination of the words from "Live Aid" and the "G8 Summit" being held July 6-July 8, 2005 in the UK.

The G8 Summit has leaders from the 8 Western world's most economically developed and powerful nations...(UK, USA, Italy, France, Germany, Japan, Canada, Russia)..who will be there discussing, trying to formulate and actively enact, concrete solutions to third world poverty, fair trade issues, as well as quelling the spread of AIDS around the globe, and famine/hunger around the globe.

Geldof wants, if possible 8 concerts held in ALL 8 G8 nations RIGHT BEFORE and to COINCIDE with the G8 Summit, to raise global public attention and awareness, followed by massive protests and demonstrations by the global public, for the public to put pressure on the 8 G8 nation's leaders to take action.

There you have it...Live 8!

I just hope this is a cause that people take seriously, I mean when the 46664 thing happened it wasn't even in the papers, never mind the TV (which showed it about a year later here in Australia).

Though, it seems that some of Geldof's concerns are being taken seriously, Bush and Blair are talking about finally writing off 3rd world country debt in the worst cases. BOUT BLOODY TIME

I still can't understand why no one in charge has ever said 'let's just drop it'. Surely that's all that needs to be done. Just drop it.
