the reports of the 30th anniversary version of a night at the opera suggest it will have extra bonus tracks on. apart from live version of the songs which are already available what new songs will be on it. am i right in thinking that songs that didn't make it onto anoto were put onto adatr with a view of making it a double album? if this is true what will be new extras?

I have yet to see anything official confirming any extra content whatsoever.

JSS (not the singer) seems sure, but while I love him dearly, he is not omniscient. As I've said elsewhere, ACDC & Springsteen's "special editions" were both just fancy packaging.

I hope to be wrong, but after the Top 7 bootlegs, overpriced downloads of live material, vague intentions of a "box set" (aka the unicorn project), Rare Live, the Brixton ticket lottery, paying more to see Queen than Kylie's high- maintenance stage show, QOL's overpricing charity releases, I'm afraid that my cynicism needs to disproved.

I KNEW you were going to say that!!!

Otherwise, I totally agree with you, and would argue that (on recent track records) your cynisism is totally justified.

LOL! Hey, if your daytime job doesn't work out, you can always become a stand-up comedian!

It made me smile (even as it was rather sad smile). On the other side, we can always hope (until the day it'll be out).

But now it's time to be gone - forever...

Here's an exclusive something you will not read on Captain Clog's soapbox.

Dr. May has never been a "writer" of "academic" music. Instead, he prefers to tinker with his guitar, or keyboards, and allows the "flow" to take him wherever the music leads. Sometimes, that original flow works, sometimes it doesn't, and sometimes it meanders and breaks into 3 or 4 different directions. (Johnny Knoxville - please note!)

(That is a fact - not a criticism - nor does it mean that he can not - or does not write it down later. It is a comment on his favourite writing style).

Examples of this evolutionary process can be found on the Magic Years video (Butterfly), the unofficial Sleepy Blues, or the unreleased Who Wants To Live Forever skip demos.

The most famously talked about version - is when Brian himself stated that "Tie Your Mother Down" was written whilst on tour, and that he recorded the chorus - both music and lyrics - into a mini cassette recorder, and that when he went into the studio, he changed very little.

So what's the point?

The majority of Brian's Queen tracks existed as home demos BEFORE he took them into the studio. ANATO tracks like '39 began life as acoustic conceptions, and it was only in the studio that they were revamped and brought fully to life.

So although there may not be loads of unreleased complete tracks, a special edition set "could" contain loads to keep us amused. (Especially considering by the very nature of the beast, all tracks will exist as both full instrumental and acapella versions).

The bad news is that I am more than certain that Dr. May will NOT allow access to his home material, and to follow up on PG's cynisism, rather than a special edition, we could end up with a damp squib - if QP decides that "special" means the inclusion of world-wide 7" singles, remixes, contemporary 12" mixes, and all the other padding which would technically be on the correct side of trade descriptions - but morally remain bereft of all substance.

In the immortal words of Linda Lovelace, "we will have to suck it and see"!!

But still, I can't wait!
