wow....

a) He can go whenever he wants

b) Newcastle don't have to recoup the fee

c) If a change of manager occurs he could go

sorry but his 4 year deal isn't worth the paper it's printed on.

At least though that he is looking for first team football, I will say that.

Michael Owen leaves Liverpool in 2004. In 2005, Liverpool are crowned European Champions.
Michael Owen joines Newcastle in 2005. In 2006, Newcastle are relegated.......?

All Newcastle have to do now is buy 10 decent players to make sure the little shrimp can crack a few goals in.

Ignoring the hypocrisy of Dudley (who was very defensive about Owen last week), are Newcastle supporters really this blind?

It's not a transfer coup to sign someone noone else wants. Especially not when you paid twice what he cost last year when all he's done since is collect splinters.

The site of the unemployed population of Newcastle queuing to pay £45 for a Michael Owen shirt reminds me of the reception for Shearer, and the medals he's won since.

wrong. wrong. and possibly ½ right.
i saw the statement on SkySports tonight - 'no getout clause'
course they do - so long as ANY of his contract remains in place they can demand ANY fee they like
accepted - if results don't change - souness will be sacked - but then shearer will be boss and owen WILL stay

NEWCASTLE UNITED!! has pulled off the ultimate signing! MICHAEL OWEN! yes i know it was yesterday morning it was announced but what the hell. OWEN WOO! Put that in you pints and drink em Liverpool!
Like we are going to win any matches all we gonna do is able to score goals now :P

hysterical!!!! just try answering two questions for me:

1. how does siging a player for £18m? who's been on the treatment bench for exactly 50% of his professional career equate to a good siging?
2. what major trophy did Liverpool win while he was there? - oh yeah...one league cup

LOL. He really wanted to join Liverpool and every Geordie knows that. He will leave after 12 months as Newcastle have got no chance of getting into the Champions League or UEFA Cup with or without him.

I'm in Newcastle and to be honest I gave up supporting 'The Toon' year's ago. Same thing happened with Keegan then Shearer and now Owen. Newcastle haven't won anything in years. I lost count of how many times I watched my old mates crying into their beer at Newcastle's latest defeat. If Newcastle were playing on my front lawn I'd close the curtains.

you can support a team - but maitaining a level of reality is important....Newcastle have not won a major trophy for 50 years....there's a reason for that - they're crap!!!!

stop beating about the bush here people....no matter who the fuck they buy.....mcdonald, keegan, shearer, cole, quinn, robert, kluivert, beardsley, rush, barnes, solano, asprilla? some things never change....Newcastle will always win fuck-all

you know the difference between newcastle supporters and Me? i am a realist - i support my team (Birmingham) in spite of 130 years of nothing...becuase i am a loyal dickhead. Newcastle fans tend to support their team because there's always another rainbow, with another pot of gold lurking at the end of it...the sad fact of reality is that 'the really big teams' legged it with the gold and smashed the pot before you got there....

Brenski, your wrong about owen winning just a league cup.
I think you'll find he won the league cup, fa cup, uefa cup charity shield and super cup in the same year. Not bad at all.

Owen only went to Newcastle as Liverpool were not going to pay double the amount they sold him for.

Liverpool may buy him again at a cheap rate , once he has to be sold as Newcastle are relegated ;)

why would anyone in the right mind want to buy a striker whose 'complete lack of goals' results in his old team ebing relegated?

Michael Owen is a quality striker and will score goals period. How one year on being on the bench is half of his professional career I will never know.
He also does have a clause in his contract. Freddie Shepherd said this...

"I have heard a little rumour that Michael has a clause in his contract which states he can leave Newcastle United in one year's time," he said.

"I can tell you now that he hasn't. Of course Michael has clauses in his contract.

"In this day and age, all top players do - Alan Shearer does. But that is not one of them.

Therefore, Michael does have clauses which will enable him to move once Newcastle do not get Champions league football.

I think he should prove his worth before even thinking about wanting clauses in his contract.....

To be honest, as good a goalscorer as he is, if I was a Newcastle fan, to see Michael Owen out there punching the sky looking delighted with joining Newcastle after he'd publicly stated that they aren't his first choice and he only wanted a year loan etc etc, I'd be slightly dissapointed.

But, either way, Souness will be gone soon and then maybe they can get a manger in who isn't a clueless prick always looking for an excuse. I hope that Shearer will be better for you...

look at what i said - don't misquote me - I SAID: Treatment Bench - ie he has been fucking injured for half his professional career

why don't you check and see EXACTLY how many games he's missed through injury? - it's almost half

you are completely overlooking Dalglish/Barnes management interval and also the Gullit (short) reign

Souness actually looks OK compared to those two
