I am so fuckin' fed up with Metallica fans who don't appreciate 'The Black Album' just because it had more general public appeal than any other album Metallica released before. For some reason there are certain music fans who think that THEY OWN rock bands, and musicians should always make the kind of music that HARDCORE FANS want them to make.

Arguably it might not be better than 'Lighting' or 'Puppets' but the fact that it was an album that appealed to EVERYONE without changing their metal roots is something very few bands can achieve. Back when 'The Black Album' came out the heaviest thing girls would listen to was Bon Jovi, but all of sudden even girls found themselves liking Metallica. I remember being very surprised when my sister asking me to borrow a cassette tape of 'The Black Album'.

Dood, but they had better. Still very good. Love Sad but true- what a track! God That failed is another killer, same goes for "My Friend Of Mysery"... Great album, incredible sound (only sometimes too "clean"), classic, that's it...
I must admnit though I prefer "Ride The Lightning", "Master of OPuppets" and even "...And Justice..." (even though the sound on the latter one sucks big time). But it's a classic. How can you go wrong with a riff like "Enter Sandman"? :)

I remember once Lars Ulrich mentioning on an interview what was the main motivation to make 'The Black Album' more appealing to the general public than any of their previous albums. He said that after '...And Justice For All' they realized that they just made an album as heavy and loud as it can be, and they just didn't want to repeat the same formula just to please the hardcore fans.

It's funny how at first they weren't so fond of Bob Rock for producing mainstream hair rock bands like Bon Jovi and Skid Row, but Bob Rock himself eventually made them realize that they had far more potential than they thought they ever had.

To anyone who loves Metallica and 'The Black Album' I'd strongly recommend the documentary 'A Year & A Half In The Life of Metallica' which shows the recording sessions of 'The Black Album' as well as the promo tour for the album and its massive unexpected success.

"Ride The Lightning", "Master Of Puppets" and "...And Justice For All" are better, in my opinion, but it still is a great album to listen to.

"Of Wolf And Man" is my favorite song on this one. In fact it comes near to my all-time favorite Metallica-song.
