1. Buddy Rich - This guy really knew how to put on a show to make drumming more showy and fun, giving drummers more of a spotlight than they would most often (and still do) have. Definitely the greatest drummer of all time. And his band kicked ass.

2. Roger Taylor - He kind of drummed for my favorite band of all time.

3. John Bonham - He drummed for my second favorite band of all time.

4. Max Weinberg - You might think I chose him because of his work with Bruce Springsteen. No, the reason he kicks ass is because of his work with Conan.

5. Ringo Starr - Can anybody say "Thomas the Tank Engine"?

Okay, so I am going to assume that not many of you have had the privilege of witnessing the masterful showmanship of Buddy Rich, otherwise I am absolutely sure he would be on every one of your lists. So here, check this out: http://www.drummerworld.com/drummers/Buddy_Rich.html and you will quickly realize that not only does he have no match in skill, but he is probably the only drummer in the world that anyone would consider to be the most fun to watch (or fun to watch, in the first place, because I know drummers get a bad rap for such things).

Someones personal favourite drummers are different to the opinion of who are the best drummers. Perhaps that is why Mr Rich isnt on peoples lists. He certainly isn't on mine.

In no particular order...
1) Rog - we all know whey, the pretty blonde legend.
2) John Otto of Limp Bizkit - he is a classicaly trained Jazz-drummer and he just adds something different to metal drumming. He isn't about playing fast all the time and has the ability to vary.
3) Dave Grohl - love him. He plays so hard, yet has so much subtelty and feel at the same time, and he just plays a good beat.
4) Taylor Hawkins - same as Dave really, just has his own style (well, modelled on Rog, Copeland and Ginger Baker).
5) John Bonham - why bother explaining? When The Levee Breaks, Moby Dick, and, and, and, and...

Had to leave out Ginger Baker though, and Mitch Mitchell, and Ryan Dusick of Maroon 5 (he is one to watch). Drummers are a depreciated commodity.

The point is that in order for someone to have a drummer on one's personal favorite list, he would have to have heard and experienced the drummer's works. I said nothing about how the best drummers should be one's favorites. The fact is, of what the general public looks for in a favorite drummer, Buddy Rich has all of it in abundance. I can't think of a drummer more entertaining, more showy, more talented, more versatile...the list goes on and on. It's natural that he should appear on more people's favorite lists if everyone should have had the chance to experience him. I can hardly say the same about most other drummers, even those mentioned in this thread.

As well as being a musician's musician, and a drummer's drummer, and one of the most influential, talented drummers of the last century, Buddy Rich was wll known for ADORING to ''kibitz'' (that's Jewish folks for kidding/or comedic talent), and razor sharp wit, and LOVED to chat, so, he was one of Johnny Carson's REGULAR and favorite guests on The Tonight Show here in the USA.

I used to watch him come on Johnny's show on a regular basis.

Fist he would obliterate the soundstage with his consummate drumming.

Then, he'd sit down with Johnny and have the audience and me in stiches, and his wit was sharp as a tack. Very entertaining and likable guy, as well as being one of the greatest drummers EVER!

Not at all, but you led me to the reasonable conclusion that my first post was left unclear, as often happens with online banter. I most certainly felt it was necessary to further explain my point.
