I am not new to this group, I just really never posted before. I just wanted to give some thoughts. I went to the show on Sun, and thought it was fantastic. I just don't get the people who completely feel the need to bash this tour. I do feel it is fine that everyone is entitled to their own opinions. If you think the tour sucks fine, I live in America (even if some of you don't), and here, we can think however we want. It is not necessary though to tell others to boycott the show. It's silly. To those of you though that get upset with people like Bryan's Permed Poodle or whatever his name is, if you've ever dealt with a 3 yr old or taken a basic psychology course, ignore him rather than answer him, he will only get more upset, just a thought. But anyway, for people who say that since Freddie died the rest of the guys should hang up their boots, just step back and think about that for a second. I mean, I'll be the first to say there will NEVER be another Freddie, but cmon, if the President of the US were to die, would we have no more President ever again? If the guy who drives your kids to school gets sick, do they stop the bus service..you get the point. I know they're silly analogies, but Brian and Roger just downright love to play, and they're amazing at what they do. They're not doing this for the money-if they wiped their asses with $100 bills for the rest of their lives they'd have more money then most of us-they just want to play. I know when I go I don't want my family sitting in a dark room talking about when I was around. I mean seriously, do you guys have that low of an opinion of Freddie, saying how he'd be upset with this tour. He seemed like such a cool guy, he'd probably be the first to have told them to do this. I don't know, this is going on quite long, sorry to post such a long message but I figure this a good place to do it. Have a good night all.

I don't like the idea of this tour. I sure don't think Freddie is mad at the guys watching them from above...However, in his interviews he says he would never want to keep doing the same things again and again if his career started to decline. In an interview from the mid 80s the interviewer asks him whether he thinks there's an age limit for rock-and-rolling. He says that he believes Queen will have enough creativity to move on to different things when they realize they are not at the peak of their success anylonger. He said that when his legs wouldn't carry him anymore, he would stop touring and move to something else, just as creative.
He said that he would never play just 1 show in a stadium where years before they had sold out 3 shows, just because Queen wouldn't be able to sell out 3 shows anylonger. Having reached the best, this would mean failure to him.
This is what Freddie said. This doesn't mean he hates the tour...But this was his opinion in 1984.

This tour doesn't seem to be something creative to me. It's just about replaying the old stuff. Of course Bri and Roger are free to do whatever they like, and fans are welcome to enjoy themselves at the shows with PR. I don't think it's a matter of being wrong or right. It's just about the way one feels.

Cheers

i agree. im glad both rog and bri can do this, im glad for all the fans that still get huge enjoyment listening and watching them. on a personnal note i went to see them and it was only after they played the 1st notes that i realised that me coming to watch them was a waste of time. they didnt do anything new with any of the songs, paul rodgers was ok but he did have problems hitting some of the notes and obviously hes not half as dynamic as freddie so it all seemed a little pointless to me. he may have a fantastic voice but hes just singing the songs in the exactly the same style and manner as before. but anyway, i must say the crowd went bonkers for them though, especially when freddie got a mention.

The interview I was referring to in particular is on the mercuryparadise site.
The interview is from 1984 and I think the relevant part on this subject is in Part 5. It's a great interview BTW.

Fairy - that was Freddie's opinion on the band THEN.

It doesn't necessarily mean that the other guys in the band accepted that opinion as "band policy" back then, let alone right now.

Brian and Roger have their own paths to tread together now as a new band called Queen and I just hope that they do start to do different things for my own personal interest.

Plenty of people seem to be entirely happy that they are just playing the same old stuff night after night, but I find it tedious beyond belief and surprising that they had nothing "different" to play in New York. If they don't come up with new material soon, I will have nothing more to do with the project.

Benn, you're absolutely right. That is just Freddie's opinion from the 80s. Sometimes the question comes up about how Freddie might feel about the tour. Of course nobody knows, but that is what I can guess according to his opinion expressed in that interview and elsewhere. Of course there's no such thing as band policy. It is just Freddie's view of things and Brian and Roger have no obligations at all to agree with it.

I personally agree with Freddie's view, and with what you said, but many see it differently and are perfectly happy with hearing the same old songs.

I have no problem with the tour just this group
using the "Queen" +PR name.

Just saw the ROTC DVD. A great rock concert, yes.
Is this "Queen" + PR? No.

Sadly, IMO No Freddie, No John, No Queen.

During "days of our Lives" and "Bo Rhap", tears
were rolling down my face. Very sad.

What does everyone else think about the DVD?

It's a little odd that. Freddie didn't want to be seen as old and incapable of doing his job.
But so much of the concept of the band was to *entertain* people, first and foremost. So though Freddie might have disapproved of this new tour, I think he'd just be happy that people are being entertained by it?
Maybe. Who knows, I don't!

Fairy, these old songs (and the one new one) are being done in order to spike the interest in Queen for the public (especially in the U.S.) who frankly aren't buying the c.d.s anymore so that they will buy new l.p.s and the future box sets. You don't want this stuff going all out of print in just a few years after their releases do you? This is the same thing that Page/Plant, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, Black Sabbath, and The Who have been doing for years now. Of course some have taken too long to put a new product out and I hope that by 2007 Queen will have a new studio l.p. because they don't have the years to wait around and blow time like some of those other artists have done...

I haven't seen Queen + PR live yet (am anxiously awaiting their North American - hopefully including Canada - tour next year), but have no problems with this new formula, seeing as:
- I became a Queen fan in 1991, at a fairly tender age, however you have to admit the timing was very unfortunate
- watching their live performances on video and DVD made me reach the conclusion that giving up a year of my life in exchange for going back in time to one of their concerts would not be a bad deal at all (if anyone can arrange that in any way does not involve doing bad things to a black chicken at midnight, let me know :-)
- I disagree that the rest of the band should be burnt on Freddie's funeral pyre while they're still very much alive and rockin'
- John's right to retire if that's his wish cannot be challenged
- in conclusion, since Freddie + Brian + Roger + John will not happen live again, Brian + Roger + PR is the closest thing to the original that can bring the band back on stage. And according to the reviews PR's not at all bad, which cannot be said about some other rumoured frontmen over the years (think George Michael, brr <shudder>).
