I've just noticed that on QOL they've put up three new bootlegs (interestingly none of which carry concert dates). One of which is called "Cry Argentina" and so I assumed that this would be from SOuth America - WRONG! Having listened to the samples this is clearly the Montreal '81 gig(s), previously released as "We Will Rock You" on DVD and video.

Anyone know what the hell is going on with this??? Is is just that they have posted the wrong sound files (I didn't thin kthey owned the rights for this perofrmance anyway) or are QPL trying to fleece us again?

As an addition, I've just noticed that although it is the Montrea gigs as I said, (but not in running order and not complete), there are a few extra tracks (Ogre Battle, Father To Son, and Liar, and Son And Daughter) from another gig in excellent quality - does anyone know which gig these are from??

Indeed Walter, you beat me to it, but, just incase anyone was wondering, the Cry Argentina is a hybrid of Montreal 21 July 1982 and Golder's Green 13 Sept 1973.

Queen: Live Montreal Forum, 21 July 1982
Queen: We Will Rock You Official Live Video/ DVD
Queen: We Will Rock You 2001 US Digitally THX/ DTS Remaster Pioneer PA - 1151554
Queen: Cry Argentina Official Bootleg Download, Queenonline.com 10 October 2005
Cry Argentina Bootleg CD
Freddie’s Last Journey Bootleg CD
We Will Rock You, Let Me Entertain You, Play The Game, Somebody To Love, Killer Queen, In Love With My Car, Get Down Make Love, Save Me, Now I'm Here, Dragon Attack, Love Of My Life, Under Pressure, Keep Yourself Alive, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Bohemian Rhapsody, Tie Your Mother Down, Another One Bites The Dust, Jailhouse Rock, Sheer Heart Attack, We Will Rock You, We Are The Champions, God Save The Queen.
Queen: Unreleased, Live Golders Green Hippodrome, London, 13 September 1973
Procession, Father To Son, Son & Daughter, See What A Fool I've Been, Ogre Battle, Liar, Jailhouse Rock, Stupid Cupid, Bebop a Lula, Big Spender, Bama Lama Lama Loo

Queen In Concert '74 comes from Cologne 6 December 1974

Queen: Official Bootleg Download, Queen In Concert ‘74, 6 December 1974
Recorded: 6 December 1974 – Cologne, Germany
Released: Queen Official Download Store, Queenonline.com 10 October 2005
Queen In Concert ‘74 Bootleg LP
Procession, Keep Yourself Alive, Now I’m Here, Seven Seas Of Rhye, Ogre Battle, Stone Cold Crazy, Father To Son, Liar, White Queen, In The Lap Of The Gods (revisited), Flick Of The Wrist, Big Spender, Medley, Modern Times Rock ‘n Roll, Son And Daughter, Jailhouse Rock, God Save The Queen

Cardiac Arrest
Cardiac Arrest is (as Walter correctly states) is a hybrid of various live tracks from various live concerts (March 31, 1974 + December 24, 1975 +), but, (and this is the good bit) track number nine, "Now I'm Here" is stolen from the officially released: "Queen - Live Killers" LP/CD! So it seems that Queen are now officially bootlegging their own official product. I wonder if they can sue themselves?

Hypocrisy
Finally: Isn't it strange how Brian May complained on his own website, that he thought the Digitally THX DTS Surround 5.1 - Remastered "We Will Rock You" DVD was "poorly mixed", and was therefore NOT officially endorsed by the band, yet, by the same token, is allowing this degraded 2.0 stereo degenerated hunk of junk to be officially sanctioned and released under the holy Queen name?

Thank you John for the additional information, always an interesting read. But I think you have mixed up something. Queen played the Forum in November 1981 and July 1982. Both the WWRY vhs/dvd and the Official bootleg are from the November 1981 concerts, not July 1982 ;-)

Weren't these three Top 100 bootlegs released on October 19th instead of October 10th?

By the way: how is your shoulder?

I believe that the date is in fact November 24th and 25th, 1981.

LOL!!!

This is not about bootlegs anymore, John. As you have said, these are PIRATE copies of their own material. I would not count CARDIAC ARREST as one of the best bootlegs around as it is a compilation, but that is just personal taste. ...But including an incomplete and degraded version of an officially available product, that is a SHAME. I wonder what those so-called "bootleg experts" had in mind.

Here's a copy of an email I sent to Brian about this, along with his direct reply to me (which came within 24 hours) - let's hope that from his reply he will look into this and maybe post something on his site in due course in response -

MY EMAIL:

Hi Brian,

I just wanted to know your feelings about the latest additions to the Queen 'Top 100 Bootlegs', available via Queen Online. - Specifically, my question relates to the one titled "Cry Argentina".

Judging by the title, a fair guess would be that this is from the Buenos Aries concerts in 81 - unfortunately having checked out the samples, it appears that most of the audio is taken directly from the "We Will Rock You" concerts in Montreal, already released on DVD/Video.

You have previously stated on your website that you are not overly fond of the finished audio from these gigs, but that you/Queen Productions can't, at present, do anything about it due to rights issues, so I am more than slightly surprised therefore to find this audio, which is already fully commercially available, being sold as official Queen product, in a lesser quality than the PCM/DTS/DD5.1 mixes on the DVD.

In addition, the worst thing of all is that the version of 'Now I'm Here' from one of the other bootlegs ("Cardiac Arrest") seems to be the very version from the "Live Killers" CD - it seems that Queen's profession to want to beat the bootleggers at their own game seems to have be taken too far, by the fact that you are bootlegging your own ooficially released albums!

I don't know whether you, Queen Productions, Jim Beach or EMI are aware of any of the above, but knowing the care that has always in the past been taken with your output, I'm sure that this isn't a deliberate ploy to get money out of fans who will buy anything because it has the Queen name on. (this could also easily be seen as the case for the forthcoming 'ANATO' 30th anniversary release which, judging by the content detailed at retailers stores, falls well below the mark that should be afforded to such a significant release, especially when compared to many other 'lesser' albums celebrating anniversaries that are being released at the same time (Elton John, Bruce Springsteen and even Patti Smith luxurious 30th ann. packages to name just three).

The following text is taken directly from the bootleg download page:

"QueenOnline.com proposes to offer the VERY BEST of the bootlegs, in terms of sound quality and variation of material, at a sensible price. We have effectively 'cut to the chase', offering serious Queen fans the best of the bunch - 'the crème de la crème', as Freddie might say!

With expert advice from three acknowledged experts on Queen bootlegs; Frank Hazenberg, Andreas Voigts, Frank Palstra, we offer only the most interesting and significant material. Now you can download the very best of QUEEN IN CONCERT at your leisure, and know that each recording is the best around. Each month we will offer further concerts, so please keep this site bookmarked and keep coming back to check out which gigs have been posted.

Playing the bootleggers at their own game seems an appealing prospect for most of us; here we hope to do just that, hoping that in the end it will lead to greater satisfaction all round."

Comparing the above statement with the actual content of two of the three latest bootlegs, there is obviously a huge discrepancy - almost 'trade descriptions act' territory!!

Please don't take this letter as an assault on you, or Queen, but having seen on the Queen discussion forums a lot of concerned fans' reactions to some of the points mentioned above, this letter is my attempt to raise these points directly with the 'man in charge' and to invite you to comment accordingly so that we can know at least some of the thinking behind some of the product currently being released.

With best wishes

I don't find that the least bit odd.

But that's probably just because I already think that "Queen" has become nothing more than a personal till for some people. ;)
